How to backspace/delete an entry on iPhone keypad during a call?

When entering a multiple-digit entry (such as a phone number) on the keypad during a call, there doesn't seem to be a way to backspace over a mis-typed digit. Surely there must be a way to do this without closing out the entire call and restarting the "menu game". I've seen a history of this problem, yet no viable solution.

As soon as you start typing on the numeric keypad, an x should appear to the right of the 0 on the bottom. Tap the x to remove digits you've typed.

I completely missed the fact they were doing it during an active call. Of course you can't backtrack in real-time.

You can't do that. You're not entering information on the phone that will be sent in the future. The DTMF tones for the keys you're pressing are being sent in real-time. You can't 'backspace'.

This thread gives appears to be the most relevant to the current situation. Currently there is no way to solve the problem. Either speak clearly or type correctly if you don't want to start over when answering questions to a virtual assistant.

That is not correct.

You can backspace keyboard entries before you connect a call if you wish to correct a mis-pressed number as lobsterghost1 indicated.

I think this answer explains the confusion in my mind now that I looked up "DTMF" and thought about it a little. Bottom line...you (still) can't do that. Thank you.
