System data taking up more than half of storage space

So a while back I bought myself iCloud+ so my phone and photos would be backed up on there and I would have a lot of space everything was fine until I think I updated my phone and suddenly my system data was taking up almost all of my storage space I have an iPhone 12 with 64gb. I’ve cleared all browsing history for safari and restarted my phone but the issue keeps happening… I can’t look at my photos because of the storage problem, I can’t take photos either and my phone is so slow now that it’s like this… I don’t have a MacBook so I could do the backup method thing… so idk I just wish I could do something about this

This typically means you have some corrupt data on your iPhone. If you haven’t yet, try a Forced Restart.

If that doesn’t help, you’ll want to erase and restore your iPhone from a backup. It is best when you do it with a computer, this way a fresh copy of iOS will be re-installed onto your iPhone. If you don’t have a Mac or PC, see if you can borrow a friend or neighbors, if not, visit your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider where they can help you do this.

I am having the exact same problem, I also have paid for extra storage. I have an iPhone 12 64GB & my system data is at 34.9GB, IOS 11.78 my husband has the same iPhone with his system data being 4.55GB his IOS takes 16.57GB. I have done the hard reset (quickly release the volume up, then down, hold side button until Apple logo appears then release) I have tried deleting apps, pictures, messages, clearing all my data etc, I am barely able to run my iPhone at this point: can’t take pictures, screenshots. Literally nothing. Can’t even send messages at this point. Next step I have left is a factory reset (which would be my second time to attempt to fix this very clear Apple issue) support suggests what I have done.. & can’t give me any further help, when like I have mentioned my husband has the same phone & his doesn’t have this problem nor do others around me. I have the Lavender coloured phone, my husbands is black.

Paying for extra storage means you're paying for iCloud Storage. There is NO relationship between the storage on your iPhone and the storage in the Cloud. In other words, no matter how much space you rent in iCloud, can never add more space to your phone.

If your system data is too high, you could have some corrupt data in there and above Zachyy provided a link which tells you how to backup your iPhone, then restore it from backup. This will greatly lower the System Data on your phone to a normal level.

NOTE: Apple no longer sells any iPhone with 64GB of memory. 128GB is the lowest you can buy now and even that may not be enough for many people. Once purchased, there is no way to ever add memory to an iPhone. So when you buy your next phone, pay more for memory and buy the most you can afford. No one has ever regretted having more memory than they need. Many have regretted NOT having enough.

But....that storage has no effect on your iPhone. The storage for the iPhone is fixed. It cannot be increased. The only way to create more space on an iPhone is delete data from your iPhone.

So, you are saying that you have taken your phone to the Apple Store / Genius Bar or to an authorized Apple service shop and they have not been able to help?
