The old Superdrives are notoriously slow and power hungry. You would be best served to get a self-powered, drawer loading, optical drive from OWC (MacSales.com) like this one: OWC Mercury Pro USB 3.2 (5Gb/s) 24X Super-Multi DVD/CD Burner/Reader External Optical Drive with M-DISC Support. If you plan on using Blue-ray you'll need a Blue-ray app or an optical drive that supports Blue-ray.

I have an older model of this one for ripping audiobooks and it's a gem.

Macs do not have built-in support for playing Blu-Ray movie discs, and most Blu-Ray drives do not come with that software, either.

DVD-Video and Blu-Ray video authoring also requires special software that is not built in and that is not usually bundled with drives.

Also, that word “or” might imply that you can burn Blu-Ray discs on a CD/DVD-only burner, with the addition of software. Unless you have hardware that supports Blu-Ray discs, you cannot read or burn them at all.

The Mac has a built-in application to play DVD-Video discs. It is not in the regular Applications folder, but will run automatically when you insert a DVD-Video disc.

If, by "this one you [OldToad] sent," you are referring to iDVD,

• It was for authoring (creating) DVD-Video discs, not for playing them.
• It doesn't work with current or recent versions of macOS.

Did you mean to say "and"?

I thought optical drives that support Blue-ray came with software to use it or the capability was built in. Have no experience with Blue-ray. Educate me.

I'm well aware of the DVD-video requirements as I'm a long, long time user of iDVD. Hated to see that app fall by the wayside.
