iPad getting extremely hot even when not in use

Hello, I bought an iPad a few months ago, but I've encountered a strange problem. When the device is not in use, it sometimes gets extremely hot, and in about an hour, maybe 60% of the iPad's battery drains. It's alarming to me. This happens even when the Wi-Fi is turned off. Restarting the device resolves the issue.

The behaviour that you describe might suggest a malfunctioning/stalled App. If you can identify a pattern to the occurrence of unexpected heating and battery depletion, delete the offending App from your iPad.

Otherwise, if your iPad is not operating as expected, a forced-restart will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

Did you buy the iPad new and it is still under warranty?

If it is used, has the battery ever been replaced?

In any case, contact the official Apple Support about it, or visit an Authorised Apple Service Provider to get it checked.

As a start, you can also set the device bak to factory settings without using the latest backup, to rule out a software issue.

We have owned 4-5 iPads since 2012 and all get warm during charging, whether new or "well-used."

I have also found that leaving some web pages open can heat up a sleeping tablet. Close apps when you rest the computer. "Sleep" is not "shut-down." Some energy must be expended to maintain basic functions during sleep. Like your brain during sleep.

If it heats when you know it is truly turned OFF, then that's not normal.
