I would suggest turning the phone in to the lost and found department at the shopping mall. Or, failing that, turning the phone in to the police.

Unfortunately, there are people who would abuse contact information – and thus Apple leaves it up to each owner to decide whether or not they want to display such information on the Locked to Owner screen. Since that iPhone is in Lost Mode, it is very likely reporting its location to the owner. And if the owner lost it at the mall, the Lost and Found department there is probably one of the first places they would go looking for it.

Hopefully that will get their phone back to them without the need for you to know who they are.

What happened to your initial claim that you “would sincerely love to ask the owner if they want it back”?!? Implying that you would love to return their property to them? Why are you not taking the suggestions to turn the phone in to the shopping mall or the police?

Know that you cannot bypass Activation Lock. If you keep the phone, it will forever remain a “brick.”
