Recovering an iCloud ID to which I have lost access

iCloud ID log-in PW and trusted telephone number have been changed by a creepy ex who won’t give me the details I need to change back to my number or PW. Apple is requesting the numbers, expiration date + CVV of my virtual Apple titanium card in a wallet to which I no longer have access, which is effectively allowing the perpetrator to “keep the keys to my kingdom”. I cannot believe or imagine that I would be the 1st or only person “painted” into this kind of corner - I also can’t imagine or believe that Apple, who I consider to be the absolute guru’s of security + privacy protection would set up an account retrieval process which as I said in effect allows the thief to keep the stolen “goods”: continued access to my iCloud, because the telephone number at which to receive authorization codes on has been changed (by this aforementioned creep who’s refusing to “dish”, and I’ve hence blocked from contacting me in any way), the PW to ID has been changed AND they are saying that the ONLY way that these things can be undone on their side is by providing all of the details of the Master Card I used in my wallet + App Store (on which I’ve in the past 2.5 years alone purchased multiple devices using pay over time with Apple) including the cvv for what is the virtual card from Apple Card in a wallet to which I have no access, not to mention that Goldman Sachs has changed that number and CVV so many times + also, given that the one they’re asking about expires soon, it would have already been changed anyway by GS even IF I were able to somehow access those details- if I happened to have those details written down somewhere … SO how could the people who at least I have always believed were THE forefront keepers of privacy and security design a retrieval method with this large a gaping hole - this can simply not be true - this I refuse to believe is the only possible method by which Apple security could walk me through or authenticate my identity + ownership of the device on which to regain access to my iCloud? Is this actually possible? Is this true? What has anyone else’s experience (s) been?

All advice is appreciated! Greatly!

Your account is lost.

The only gaping hole in security you refer to is the ability of users to tell others what their Password is. There is nothing that is ever going to stop someone from doing that. With Two Factor Authentication, even with the Password, it is not possible for another user to log into your account without a verification code that is sent to your device, unless they were previously allowed to log into your account. Changing the Trusted Phone Numbers is only possible after a person was able to gain access to your account with information that only you should know.

At this point the only chance you had to prove your identity is through the credit card information. The CVV number on the physical Titanium Apple Card cannot be changed and is not the rotating number you refer to with the Virtual Card, unless the card is replaced. The Virtual Card and the Titanium Card have completely different numbers associated with them. There are steps that could have been taken previously to secure your account further by providing a Recovery Key, but even then it would not be helpful if that key was also given to another person.

You should consider your account as lost and create a new account. With the valuable lessons you learned, I suspect you would not allow that to happen again.

Trust me you aren't the first nor will you be the last. However, it can be prevented by not giving anyone your info or access to your device. It's not up to Apple to force people not to give their info to others.

Apple is the "Guru of privacy and security" because they are extremely strict when it comes to data. The reason they are so strict is anyone can call pretending to be you and give enough info to steal your data. So they make it full proof. Only someone with specific data (card details or access to a trusted device you are logged into already) can gain access. Not data you want to give, but data Apple has stored from you previously, almost always is a credit card you used with your Apple ID.

Without that card info you won't be able to regain access. Just remember next time to never give your passwords, passcodes, pin numbers or access to your devices to anyone. And always have a recovery contact so this doesn't happen again. Set up an account recovery contact - Apple Support

With an account recovery contact you could have bypassed everything and regained access quickly.

The Apple Card will work just as any other card.

How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support

In some cases, you might be able to shorten the account recovery process or reset your password immediately by verifying a six-digit code sent to your primary email address. You might also be able to shorten the wait time by providing credit-card details to confirm your identity. If you’re given this option, an authorization request goes to the card issuer.

That is not possible with the virtual Apple Card because for security purposes the CVV changes automatically on a regular basis, one of the reasons I love my Apple Card… unlike a physical card its information changes, can’t be easily used to make for example unauthorized repeat charges. This is precisely why I find it impossible to believe that Apple would design a system that is flawed in this way…

The physical Titanium Apple Card has no numbers, CVV or expiration date on it. It only has the owners name and Apple logo engraved on the chip side and the Goldman Sachs and Mastercard logos on the other side.

That is why requesting the details of an inaccessible constantly “rotating” virtual number is indeed a gaping hole -it effectively makes authentication in a situation where only an Apple Card has been used for Apple Store and in app purchases completely impossible.AND that, based on my many years with Apple just seems so “ un-Apple-like”

It is this specific scenario which I’m completely perplexed about- as I said given the millions and millions of people who’ve obtained Apple Card since its launch in 2019 - I cannot fathom that I would be the very first and only person confronted with this dilemma, I also cannot imagine that Apple is unaware of this conundrum and that is why I’m asking this question because having worked + played in the Apple space for over 30 years now + based on all of my experiences with Apple, this just doesn’t make sense. I have my company on the Apple Business Essentials platform so my personal iCloud really only had of irreplaceable value my photos which I transferred lickety-split to the new personal Air with new Apple ID using a lightning to C cable… I deleted the wallet and all cc apps off phone immediately which in hindsight was pretty dumb since the 2FA is Face ID on those and all of my most important docs, mortgages, deeds, titles etc are on my personal office Essentials designated iMac and dedicated Mac Book pro …

I wondering IF maybe I can find this in keychain in 1 of my Time Machine drives.. but I’m guessing that is going to be device specific too…

I am definitely out of my private **** but I would think + hope that Apple takes a look at this scenario- since it’s a rather safe bet to say that I could not possibly be the 1 and only person “painted into this corner”.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!
