Bluetooth Connects to Other Devices While Driving

When I am driving on a busy highway or city, my iphone disconnects from my car audio for several seconds before it reconnects. This happens repeatedly but more frequently is busy traffic. I thought it was wifi drop outs for a long time, but then I looked at my car audio display and it would say it disconnected and then it would reconnect.

A lot of the advice online is for you to go into your bluetooth settings and forget a device or to change settings, these settings are either out of date or assume I can pull over and disconnect from literally 10's of other devices in the few seconds that it connects and re connects. It always reconnects eventually but its frustrating as I'm listening to music or a podcast and the constant interruptions are annoying.

Is there a way to only connect to specific devices? Like when I got a new car recently I had to set it up and then it connects, so why does it connect to other cars just because they are driving past? It's not safe or even sound advice to tell people to go to settings, they are driving. I have three devices I want to connect with, my airpods, my car or my spouses car. If I change headphones or borrow or rent a car, I am happy to connect it.

Can there be a turn off auto join or something? I see directions online but they don't fit my current OS. None of them work. They just have which devices are currently connected. When I have time to do this I am not surrounded by heaps of cars with their bluetooth on.

It's great that switching from my car to airpods are seamless, but it would be even better if a 2 minute song didnt take 8 minutes bc it keeps disconnecting and re-connecting.

I have iphone 15 and on ios 18.5 please help.

Thanks!

When an iPhone is connected to a car’s audio system via Bluetooth, it will not automatically switch to another Bluetooth device unless specific conditions are met. These are:

  1. The current Bluetooth connection is interrupted or lost, typically due to signal interference from nearby electronic devices, physical obstructions, or the car's Bluetooth system momentarily dropping the connection. However, this interference usually does not come from another Bluetooth audio device actively trying to take over.
  2. Once the iPhone is disconnected from the car’s Bluetooth, it may automatically connect to another previously paired Bluetooth device—but only if:
    1. That device is powered on, within range, and set to allow automatic connections.
    2. It was already paired and trusted by the iPhone in the past.
    3. The iPhone has not prioritized another known device for automatic connection (Apple devices tend to remember recent usage patterns).

In short, the iPhone won’t jump from one active Bluetooth audio device to another unless it gets dropped by the first and the second was already on friendly terms.

Bluetooth interference can potentially cause connectivity issues due to the disruption of the wireless communication between devices. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency range, which is also used by various other devices such as Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, cordless phones, and even some baby monitors. When multiple devices are operating nearby and using the same frequency band, interference can occur.

Here's how Bluetooth interference can impact connectivity:

  1. Audio Streaming Interruptions: When you're streaming music via Apple Music or while playing audio content, Bluetooth interference can disrupt the connection between your device (such as an iPhone) and the Bluetooth speaker or headphones. This interference can result in the audio stuttering, dropping out momentarily, or experiencing poor sound quality.
  2. Bluetooth devices transmit data in packets. Interference can cause some of these packets to be lost or corrupted during transmission. As a result, the receiving device may have trouble decoding the audio correctly, leading to stuttering or delayed responses.
  3. Bluetooth signals can be weakened by interference from other devices operating on the same frequency band. If the signal strength drops significantly, it can affect the stability of the connection between your device and the Bluetooth accessory. This can result in intermittent stuttering as the connection struggles to maintain a consistent data flow.
  4. Bluetooth uses different channels within the 2.4 GHz frequency range to establish connections. When there are many Bluetooth devices nearby, multiple connections can create congestion on the available channels. This congestion can cause interference, leading to degraded performance for Apple Music streaming.

This is strange behavior, as the Bluetooth on the iPhone will not connect to anything unless the Bluetooth screen is open and the other device is in pairing mode. Anything driving past you in a car would not normally be in pairing mode, since I would imagine the person owning it is using it. Just because something appears in your list of devices in Bluetooth does not mean it is connected to it.

I've only seen this one time before here, but do not recall any resolution. I know that in larger cities and I would guess in heavy traffic you would encounter hundreds of different Bluetooth devices and could encounter interference, since there are only so many Bluetooth channels. The following Apple Support document is about headphones and Bluetooth interferece, but it could explain your issue and may provide some troubleshooting steps you could try.
