Why won't my iPhone 16 Pro Max screen turn off when idle?

Well, it seems if your phone is in front of you and active, face recognition will keep it awake, if you set it to one side, it swithes off, just tried it several times and it worked...

iphone when in standby does not turn off in a dark room I have a new iPhone 17 Pro and iOS 26. I have StandBy turned on and set to turn off automatically when the phone is not in use and the room is dark. I have Night Mode and Motion to Wake turned on. However, the phone display turns on and does not turn off in the darkened room. Any ideas on what other option is preventing this? Thanks

That’s because of Apple’s Attention Aware features.

You'll even notice that the volume of alerts will be lowered if you’re paying attention.
