How do i manually request a verification code to login on my 2nd edition apple tv?

I have an older Apple TV that I want to use again. However it doesn't understand the verification code process. And Apple apparently are not interested in making it do so.

I used to be able to manually request a verification code and insert that into my password (Appended?). However the manual request for the verification code also now appears to have disappeared.

Is there any way to get an older Apple TV to login now? or have apple effectively bricked my... brick... Forcing me to pay good $$ to buy a new one?

Please confirm if this still works:

If you have an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) (A1378, A1427, or A1469) and two-factor authentication for your Apple Account, then you may be asked to type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field. Additionally, there is a time limit, after which the code becomes invalid.

Try this: First enter the characters of your password (do not submit yet), then manually request a new verification code, then append that code to the password (no spaces or other separating characters), and then submit. That should help you get past the time limit.

Don’t expect too much from these legacy devices. Many streaming services are no longer supported on these models, and even AirPlay support is limited by select content providers (requiring later models instead). iCloud services (e.g. iCloud Photos) have also been sunset.

I think purchased movies from Apple’s media (iTunes) Store, as well as Home Sharing, should still work, though.

How do i manually request a verification code

You may request a new verification code at any time from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The last send code will supersede any prior code.

It seems Apple changed something in iOS 18.x. I can’t find the manual ‘Get a Verification Code’ link/button at this time. So perhaps that manual request now only works for slightly older, not-up-to-date, software versions. I’ll have to look into that a bit further.

The linked support document removed the paragraph on manual code request with the 2024-11-08 update. The version before that still had it:

I noticed that change to the KB this evening too.

I use hardware security keys on all of our iOS 18.6 devices; a setting which turned off the code generating capability as soon as the keys were installed “a while ago.” (was it iOS 16 … or 15 ???)

You were correct that I was using an iPhone 6s for my pre-post testing; which is “current” at iOS 15.8.4. (released abt 4-months ago)

I thought that tomorrow I’d delete the keys on one iOS 18.6 device with it’s own “single device account” to see if codes came back.

But it sounds like you’re saying it doesn't … ???
