The iPhone could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1109). 06B4.0000

Historically, I used iTunes to update my phones (I've owned several over the years). Recently I was prompted to use Apple Devices (Windows) instead of iTunes, and this worked through several iterations. However, last Saturday I boldly went through the process to update to 18.6 on my iPhone 14 and it failed, with the above message. I then went through a several hour process first trying the update again, and then going through the restore process, restoring my backup (about 50 GB), then to restore my Authenticators from iCloud, and then through Microsoft support as my Exchange MFA wouldn't restore that way, and I couldn't get back into Exchange (online - I am the administrator). In all, almost 5 hours to update and get my phone back. As a test, I updated an older phone (SE 2020) through Apple Devices, and it failed with the identical error message. As it had very little data, the restore process was much faster but still a royal pain...

Well, today my phone indicated that a new update (18.6.1) was available. This time, I tried my SE 2020 first. Same result (The iPhone could not be updated. An unknown error occurred...

I am a Windows desktop and system administrator. Just to be sure I've checked, and my Windows 11 system is completely up to date. Just prior to running the update, I ran a disk scan and an sfc (no corruption found in either test). And, before running it I shut down my security software. Other than a few Hyper-V related messages, there were no errors nor warnings during the relevent period in the system log (Event Viewer).

I have to believe that there's a bug in Apple Devices.

iPhone 14, iOS 18

So, I've solved it, and I feel a bit foolish. The issue was the USB cable between my computer and my phone. I'm a bit confused by this as I've regularly used the old cable for charging and syncing, and running a backup to Apple Devices (which I was able to do just before each update failure). I was also able to successfully restore two phones twice using that cable, but it failed on a total of 4 updates. This also means that the Apple Devices error message was spurious, that is the issue had nothing to do with networking, but some out of band communications between the PC and the phone.

Anyway, I thought you'd be interested in the end result (and I've successfully updated both phones). Sometimes the most perplexing of issues has the simplest of solutions. Oh, and I did try another computer, but I carried the (bad) cable with me...

My network is fine. I service corporate networks for a living. www.apple.com opens before I get my finger off the enter button (I have a 1.5 Gbps connection and I'm wired). The link to the apple software update servers on the document opens on my browser quite quickly, but opens to a page on firewalls (not the update server itself), but I can confirm that 17.0.0.0/8 is open. Bypassing my router isn't practical, but it has been in use for 3+ years and hasn't blocked an update, nor have I changed anything in it that would be relevent. The only "non-standard" items in my hosts file relate to my local network in a private C range.

Although I have several PC's, they are all on the same network. Looking through my router logs, there were no packets blocked (or even reported on) from 17.0.0.0/8.

Any other suggestions?
