AirTag can not reconnect to my Apple ID

I have some AirTags and after using them during a trip I stored them. I removed them from my account also (through devices on my iPhone) except 1 (don't ask me why).

Now I want to reconnect this one AirTag and it won't - since my iphone was not recognising it after putting in the battery, I removed it (like the others) from my devices. I reset the AirTag - it is found, my iPhone informs me it will be connected to my Apple ID, I agree - and then it say 'already connected to a different Apple ID' .. but that is impossible! The AirTag has only ever been connected to my Apple ID and not other - 100% sure.

The only thing I can think of is the fact that my old iPhone broke in the meanwhile and I have a new one now / but my profile is on my new phone and I did remove my old phone from my account (through iCloud because my old phone could not be accessed no more).. is this what happened? is the AirTag somehow connected to my old iPhone? but it was the same account?

most important: Is there any way I can use my AirTag now?

What you’re running into is Apple’s Activation Lock for AirTags. Even though you removed the AirTag from “Find My” on your old iPhone, it seems the unlink didn’t fully propagate to Apple’s servers before your device broke. Since AirTags are tied to your Apple Account (not the specific iPhone), they’ll refuse to pair if Apple still believes they’re associated with your account — even if you’re signing in with the exact same Apple Account on your new phone.

The AirTag is not “lost” to you, but you’ll need to make sure it’s completely disassociated from your Apple Account before it can be reused. Here’s what I suggest you should try:

On your new iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Items. If the AirTag still shows up, remove it again. Wait a few minutes, then reboot your iPhone.
Reset the AirTag. Ref: How to reset your AirTag - Apple Support
Sometimes the iCloud association hangs. Sign out of your Apple Account on your iPhone (Settings > [your name] > Sign Out), then sign back in and retry setup.

If it still says “already connected to a different Apple Account,” you’ll need to contact Apple Support. They can check the AirTag’s serial number against your Apple Account and clear the association if it really belongs to you.

thank you - I went through all of the procedures with Apple Support yesterday - it was exactly like that I think. The association of the AirTag with the Apple ID remained stuck since changes to it (in FindMy) did not automatically seem to propagate to other hardware, it needed to be forced - we did so on my iPad - MBP and (later) iMac before the AirTag was actually unlinked to the point it would be 'free' to relink. Funny thing was that it never showed up in the online iCloud account to begin with?

Why the existing link was not recognised as the same account.. is guesswork but my take on it is that it was due to a change in the associated email address -or- something weird with the family sharing - we will never really know but at least I have control over my AirTag again now.

FYI, AirTags NEVER show up in the Browser-based FindMy; they can only be viewed within the “Items” tab in the FindMy app on Trusted Devices.

Whenever re-configuring any “Apple Account-Wide” setting I always make sure that ALL of the devices on that particular Apple Account are online on-network, unlocked, and communicating / operating normally.

This allows them to ALL communicate to the “Apple Mothership” and might seem to allow the change to propagate more reliably

Doubt if this step is really required, but it can’t hurt and I’ve not encountered a “partially hung” account-wide setting (so far).

What is really weird: I just checked my iPad and the AirTag I removed was still there! I removed it from my iPad too .. but still I get the same message 'The AirTag is connected to another Apple ID' - what is going on? Do need to remove an AirTag from each device I have ever used with my Apple ID ?? That is going to be a problem_

Yes I did gathered that eventually - but the Apple support person I spoke with did not know this at first.. so had me checking it.. and only then realizing it was not supposed to be visible in the online version of 'find my' - It is however still rather strange that Apple did not implement that.

- just as strange as; they were not able to a) actually see or share information about a specific AirTag (I had the serial number) let alone b) dissociate it from an Apple ID which I could prove was mine / I suspect it has to do with privacy laws and to avoid enabling any form of unlawful use. The information must be accessible in some way though because they have this system to identify AirTags in place so they can share info with authorities when crime is involved?

Good question.

It’s because the actual decryption of the AirTag’s location occurs on your Trusted Device(s) by the Cipher Keys generated onto your Apple Account during the AirTag pairing process.

Apple truly does NOT know where any AirTag is located, so they can’t present it’s location within a browser.
