How do I fix MacBook Air M2 overheating in sleep mode?

Hello, I own a Macbook Air M2. It often gets warm during sleep mode, much more than when I use it. Sometimes, it is almost hot. Then it cools down when I open it and use it. It's up to date. It stresses me because: first it's sad to see there is a malfunction, secondly I worry about fire when I leave home. I heard about those Apple cellphones who took fires, one time in a plane. Update after update, I expect the problem to be fixed. But it is not. I see there are many people reporting the issue with Mac Mini M4, Macbook Pro, and so on. I would be happy if Apple replies that it is normal, some system task in the background, no worries. But they don't. But I know it is not normal because it too hot, too often and too long. Maybe they could fix it, or maybe they could give a list of apps that creates the issue.

I slows me in my work of course.

I also worry that it will damage the computer because heat is not good. So i try to think about unplugging every time but sometimes i forget. Sometimes, i even go back home just to unplug it.

It is not realy a question, it is more a call.

Thanks

Run the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for possible clues.

You can also use the following Terminal command to view the Sleep & Wake incidents which includes battery level, time & duration, and reason for the sleep/wake.

pmset -g log |  grep -iE 'Sleep  |Wake  '   |   grep -iE '^2025-08-23|^2025-08-24'

This command will only show events on 2025-08-23 and 2025-08-24 so you can capture events overnight. You can modify the dates accordingly. However, the rest of the command must be entered exactly or it will give unexpected results. The most critical item for filtering results is the two spaces after for the "Sleep | Wake " section. It is best to copy & paste the command and use the arrow keys & delete key to edit the date portion.

Unfortunately the reason for the sleep & wake events may be a bit cryptic.

If you have subscription apps, they may be "phoning home" during idle hours. Try closing all apps and open web pages, and then sleeping it. Does the heating repeat?

My new M4 Pro Macbook Pro 14" is the coolest running notebook computer I have even owned or used.

Like an automobile engine, computers get hotter the more work they must do. Doing work makes heat. Your body gets hot when you exercise, right?

A few known causes of higher computer workloads and thus, temps:

  • Chrome
  • some web pages
  • gaming
  • video conferencing
  • streaming video
  • useless anti-virus and so-called "cleaning" apps
  • keyboard covers
  • using the computer in your lap, on a blanket, or on a pillow.

All those are user-correctible

I heard about those Apple cellphones who took fires,

Really? 🛑 BE careful what you believe on the Great Prevaricator, the internet. Those were Samsung phones, and essentially only one model— the Galaxy Note 7. 2016. Not iPhones. There are lots of Apple haters out there but little gospel truth.

Batteries in old Mac laptops (pre-2006 models) had overheating issues, but the same make of batteries had high heat issues in Windows laptops as well. Apple dealt with that long before the first Intel Macs came out. Every laptop maker gets batteries from a vendor, and it was a vendor issue.

Do you think these apps make the computer hot when it is on sleep mode and plug to the charger?

But not on sleep mode unpluged?

I think you mean when the computer is running, right?

hello,

there is the result from terminal. I forgot to mention that it happens only when the computer is plugged to the charger.
