Keeping the Mac OS version up-to-date often sidesteps issues.
You may need to check your MacOS version(s) is the newest available compatible version for your iMac model, and for your laptop model. Eg: You can check in System Settings > General > Software update)
(NB: It is always wise to back-up your Mac if you choose to update, or upgrade, the MacOS version)
Eg: MacOS 14: What's new in the updates for macOS Sonoma - Apple Support says macOS Sonoma 14.7.8
and "This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users."
MacOS 15: What's new in the updates for macOS Sequoia - Apple Support says macOS Sequoia 15.6.1
and "This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.

Wondering which password you changed ... eg: laptop (admin) log-in, or your Apple Account password
Your Apple Account is the account you use to access Apple services like the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and more. It includes the email address and password you use to sign in as well as the contact, payment, and security details you use across Apple services.
You can check you are signed in to your computers with the correct Apple Account details you use for Music and Messages :Eg: See: Sign in to your Apple Account on the web or in your device settings - Apple Support

If more help is needed: Try signing in to your Apple Account online, and check all details are correct, or you can edit any details you need to there. Apple Account sign-in webpage: https://account.apple.com/

Note: If you change any Apple Account details: You may need to wait 24 hours for the correct details to come into use everywhere they are required. (Else: Restarting a computer (Apple menu > Restart) may update the details sooner. Restarting also re-establishes connections, deletes temporary files, etc., and often restores order.)
Else: If MacOS version is up-to-date on computers, and Apple Account details are correct:

Re: "It lets me back into Messages, but only for a moment before logging me out again".
If you have any completely unnecessary third-party (non-Apple) apps installed. like virus-checkers, ad-blockers, cleaners, and the like, (even VPN), try turning them off (or use uninstallers from their developers), and see if it makes a difference. (ie: Such apps are often the cause of interference. )
Also, any third-party apps you find necessary need to be kept up-to-date to side-step incompatibility issues.
Same thing here. Just started today (but I didn't change my password). It lets me back into Messages, but only for a moment before logging me out again. Restarted to same effect. On OS 13.7.8 (MBP M1Pro). Can't upgrade past OS 13 yet for managed IT reasons.
