Why is Roblox now rated as 17+?

Setting up parental controls, and Roblox will not open with App age settings at 12+. It requires these to be at 17+.

What is on Roblox that requires kids to be 17+ to use? This is extremely concerning.

what the AI says

"Roblox did not get a new "17+" rating, but rather introduced a "Restricted" content maturity label for experiences created by users 17 and older, requiring ID verification to access. This new label allows for more mature themes like strong violence and crude humor, reflecting Roblox's growing older user base, while still upholding its safety and civility standards. Users must be 17 or older and complete age verification to create or engage with this content.

What is the "Restricted" content label?

  • This is a new content maturity label within Roblox that allows creators 17 and older to make experiences with more mature themes.
  • These experiences can contain elements like strong violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humor, romantic themes, unplayable gambling, and strong language.

Who can access this content?

  • Only users 17 years of age or older can access these experiences.
  • Access requires age verification, typically by uploading a government-issued ID and a live selfie.

Why was this introduced?

  • Roblox aims to provide a safe and appropriate platform for all ages.
  • The platform has a growing number of users between 17 and 24 years old, and this new category allows creators to make content specifically for this older audience.

What are the safety measures?

  • All experiences, including Restricted ones, must adhere to Roblox's safety and civility standards.
  • Strict community standards still apply, especially concerning harassment, discrimination, and violence.
