Live Translate not working with AirPods Pro 2 on iPhone 15 Pro

I have iphone 15 pro, airpods 2 pro, latest ios 26 code, siri, artificial AI enabled along with spanish language downloaded to translate app but this will not work. I hold airpods and try 1 or 2 pushes on the pods ear piece but never get the live translate message to pop up like it is supposed to. I have used both beta ios 26 and now the official ios 26.0 release. Latest code on both airpods and iphone.

i have airpods 3 pro on order and will try that when they arrive.

has anyone gotten live translate to work with airpods 2 pro? I have seen some videos claiming it works.

Here is the fix.

tldr: Download both languages> translating from and translating to, to make live translation work.

Correct, need to make sure firmware/software is up to date.

open apples translate app. download not only the language you need translated, but also the language you need translated too.

I was just downloading Spanish, but once I opened the translate app, went to setting then languages and downloaded both, my AirPods started working the translate feature. When I only downloaded Spanish I would get a 'set up languages' banner notification.

I have the AirPods 4(ANC) with firmware version 8A356. I downloaded a few languages via the translation app and have verified that the languages show up in the languages tab under the AirPods setting that are shown when I open the AirPods case. When I press and hold both AirPods I only hear this message, "To use live translations with AirPods you'll need to download languages to this iPhone." I only download German & Spanish and it shows that I have English (US, German, and Spanish (Spain) listed as downloaded languages. I think I am doing everything right, so it seems that the feature is still BUGGY. I would appreciate any updates on how to be successful.

Hey everyone,

Once you’ve downloaded the languages, close the screen (swipe up) and then reopen the language settings. You should now be able to download any other languages that weren’t available before.

If you open the Translate app on your iPhone, it will start translating automatically.

  • Is it live? There’s a slight lag of a few seconds.
  • Does it work well? Yes, the translations are very accurate.

I’m based in the UK, and it’s working fine with my AirPods Pro 2.

I want this translate to work so badly.

I have a USA iCloud account, an iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 26.0, and brand new AirPods #2 with 8A357 bought specifically for my current trip to Spain. I also have full AppleCare.

They “worked” for about five minutes if you call a ten second delay working.

Now there is no combination of resetting, disconnecting, reloading etc that I can do to get the app or the translate feature to work.

Totally worthless purchase at this point. The app crashes or turns off translate mode within seconds.

im in Spain for another few days. Any ideas would be helpful.

thank you

I live in the US and having the same problem. I have a iPhone 16 pro and AirPod pro 2s and I’m not getting the live translate. I don’t know if it’s because of me not updating my AirPods properly because it’s showing that I’m on version 7E93 but when I go on the apple website it’s saying I’m up to date. Someone fill me in if I’m doing something wrong or is this just a problem ok their end.

UPDATE: My Live Translation is now working! 👏 Apparently I am not _allowed_ to tell you why 😳

But anyway, after I made the change (which I am not allowed to mention) I held the stems to start Live Translation. Went to the Translate App on my iPhone 15 Pro and chose Translate from German to English UK, then brought up a German football commentary on my Mac and Hey Presto, my AirPods started the (somewhat) simultaneous translation.

Then tried the same with a Spanish football commentary- also working 👏

Note: The AirPods apparently have to listening to an outside audio source. I couldn’t start Live Translation of a foreign language commentary played directly from my iPhone through my AirPods. Has anyone else noticed this?
