How to revert Safari sidebar to a simple list on macOS Sequoia 15.5?

Requiring the use of Terminal is not “easy.” And if you had bothered to read all the replies here, you would realize that there are problems with that, too.

I did read them all, and the instructions are quite explicit: Allow Full Disk Access to Terminal, then copy and paste 2 commands.

And the problem is fixed in iOS 26.

I'm sorry, I should have added that once you are in full disk access, you need to manually add terminal to your list.

at the bottom left of the full disc access list, click the 'plus sign".

and from there, navigate to terminal (found in Applications > Utilities) and add it to full disk access.

I'm on Safari 26.1 (20622.2.11.119.1) and MacOS 15.6.1 (24G90)

I've tried the 6x6 commands and they don't work for me. I tried running with sudo. I tried to give Terminal Full Disk access. I also looked for the three dots for Compact but they're not present.

I see other comments about a new Safari update that allegedly enables the three dots. I really don't want to update just to restore settings that were previously removed. I'm going to run this update and if those dots aren't there or something else gets worse, I'm going to be super displeased.

Going back to when Apple completely destroyed WatchOS, I've intentionally disabled auto-updates on all my devices to avoid imposing irrational UX changes. I'm not sure how this could have changed on my computer.

Update: The upgrade to Safari 26.2 (20623.1.14.18.4) did in fact enable the ••• menu. Selecting Compact improved the UX. However, it's not fully the same. Also nice to get rid of Recently Saved items by disabling Show Folders on Top.

I will never understand the reasoning to make the user experience less user friendly for the sake of nothing more than change. There are plenty, plennnnnty, of issues that have been reported in Mac OS for a decade that Apple has not fixed. These needless aggravations continue to push me away from the Apple ecosystem towards more specialized and stable software.

Yes close safari down, then open terminal having copied lines of code from this discussion click on terminal so you have an active window, paste the code, press Enter and should all work.

Only if you ar lucky to have them. Which apparently is not the case for Sequoia.

The terminal commands are the only way out of this.

Update to the latest Sequoia OS and you will get the three dots just like in Tahoe…

This feature was added in the new Safari update for Sequoia last week. So you don’t need the terminal commands…
