How can I fix Wi-Fi and CarPlay issues on iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Hi All, starting this thread as I purchased an iPhone 17 Pro Max today. Obviously it’s launch day so there’s not too much information on bugs as iOS 26 has recently come out in conjunction with the release of this phone. However, I’ve noticed some issues with my new phone and was wanting to see whether this is a ‘just me’ issue or it seems to be impacting other users.

Ive noticed that my wifi consistently was dropping in and out on setup and that my wireless apple carplay seems to disconnect intermittently.

I have tried a network settings reset with no resolution (twice) but would be really frustrated to have to reset my phone completely after transferring all my data across to my new phone.

I may end up returning this device and getting another one if any further issues persist whilst the return window is still an option.

People on the MacRumors forum are experiencing the same issues, and most of them are blaming the new WiFi chip. Apple really let us down this time. If they are working on a solution, why not come out and say it? There’s an article coming out in our local town newspaper warning people to hold off on upgrading to the new iPhone 17. Maybe this will catch momentum with it being discussed on X and other platforms. Perhaps Apple will take notice and create a sense of urgency.

I can confirm, there must be an issue with the new iPhone 17 series.

Yesterday, I got a new iPhone 17 Pro Max. Tried today to connect to my Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max car wirelessly. Wireless CarPlay is not working (can we call it Cargate?!). It has iOS 26.0.1 by the way.

I tried to connect iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 26.0.1 and connects without issue. Tried to connect the 17 with wire, it just worked. However, wireless connection is not working.

Is Apple recognizing this issue in any way?!

I’ve tried everything, including three different iPhone 17 and Pro models, but nothing has worked. It appears that the issue is with maintaining the WiFi connection on older CarPlay radios. I’m considering returning all three of our family phones and reverting back to our 14Pro models. I’ve been patiently waiting for an update to resolve this issue, but I’m growing increasingly frustrated with the wait.

iPhone 17 Pro - iOS 26.1 - Still crashing

Since I changed to iPhone 17 Pro CarPlay is always crashing or freezing.

Tested it wired with USB and wireless with Ottocast Mini Cube 3.0.

No chance to have a working CarPlay longer then a few minutes.

Different crahes. Sometimes just disconnecting without reconnecting. Sometimes whole CarPlay is freezing.

My iPhone 15 Pro worked like a charm with iOS 18.x and 26.0. So it is definitely a problem with the iPhone 17 Pro.

I rented a Hyundai Kona and my 17ProMax worked perfectly with CarPlay never disconnecting. However, my regular car has an aftermarket CarPlay adapter that worked perfectly before but now frequently disconnects. Either iOS 26 doesn’t like aftermarket adapters or there’s an issue with the new Apple modem not liking aftermarket adapters. I’m not changing phones so I sure hope there’s a firmware fix.

Just one more point for consideration about the whole VPN discussion. If you have VPN enabled it is more likely that your iPhone won't connect to the head unit at all rather than randomly connecting and disconnecting over time.

After I received my second replacement phone and updating the firmware on one of my CarPlay radios, I did not have any connectivity issues anymore even though I still have VPN installed on my phone. (Nobody should connect to a public WiFi without VPN, not even on an airplane!)

First I find it interesting that Nissan knows that their car is not compatible with the iPhone 17 so that’s somewhat of an acknowledgement that Apple has communicated to car makers andknows their 17 has a major issue.

Somewhat similar is in my case the fact that I’ve called my year and a half old aftermarket stereo maker, pioneer brand, and they too acknowledge the issue and also tell me they have no idea if a firmware update will be available for this issue. Bottom line, I’m screwed… Apple is not standing behind their product

I just tried updating to the latest developer build because I'd heard some positive comments. Anyway, I can confirm things are definitely better with the new build, it's still not fully there. I was able to connect without it dropping while navigating via carplay, but then I got a phone call and very shortly after that call finished carplay disconnected. I guess Apple are working on it but they still have a way to go.

So even after the new iOS26 developer update, carplay has degenerated right back to where it was. It's now disconnecting all the time again. Even worse, or rather - still the same, after the disconnection you can pull out the USB cable hoping to still have Maps on the phone itself guide you to your destination BUT now you've also lost audio through the phone's speakers. I pulled over, restarted the phone, did NOT connect the USB cable to my Nissan Leaf, yet the navigation still wouldn't work through the speakers. What a mess. How on earth does a problem this widely awful get released to the world? I guess that what happens when your quality control has failed :-/.

And yet, there are millions upon millions upon millions of people who have no issues with CarPlay. CarPlay has worked reliably in our two cars since iOS 26 was first released. So to suggest quality control has failed isn't exactly accurate. Are there issues for "some" people with CarPlay? Sure. You're one. But that doesn't mean everyone is having an issue. When you factor in the number of car manufacturers, different infotainment system, over generational differences (what year the cars system was designed), you understand it can't be easy to determine what the issue is.

What did Nissan say when you contacted them for help with their system? We've seen that many car manufacturers have rolled out updates for their cars system to help their customers. But Apple can't fix a cars infotainment system. Only the cars manufacturer can.

I am not minimizing the fact that some people truly are having issues. But you can't assume it's a quality control issue either. It's far more complex.

I guess users complaints are focused on iPhone 17 series, especially iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, not iOS 26. I myself, I have no issues with iOS 26 on my iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Besides, for those insisting it has to be fixed by the car manufacturer: who will pay for me the costs for the firmware update and for the precious time I am losing in the process?

Sorry, but not buying a device with more than a grand to be informed afterwards that "I must ask for a car infotainment software repair" for a modern infotainment software that is already working perfectly fine with every other older iPhone models and ALL Android phones, and not paying extra penny for that!

And not only that, Apple did not mention anywhere that their new models and chips may have CarPlay compatibility issues with multiple car brands and models!
