iPhone 16 Plus stuck in boot loop after iOS 26 update – anyone else?

Hi everyone,

A couple of days after installing the iOS 26 update, my iPhone started behaving strangely. A few times, the screen went black with just the loading icon, but the device restarted on its own after a few seconds. The last time this happened, however, it turned into an endless loop.

I tried a restart and then the force restart method (Volume Up → Volume Down → Side button). That worked initially, but then my phone got stuck in a boot loop. After a few failed attempts, I reached the recovery assistance screen. It showed “no known issues found,” but it also couldn’t identify why the device wasn’t restarting.

I attempted recovery using another iPhone on iOS 26, but that phone had a “no internet connection” issue at the same time. I then tried updating via my Windows laptop, but the updates failed. Eventually, I used my Mac — even there, restoring/resetting initially failed a couple of times, but finally it worked.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a recent backup. My Photos library hadn’t been backed up properly for over a year because of the way macOS requires the library to be on internal SSD storage. I only recently formatted an APFS disk to merge my old and new photo libraries.

In the end, I was able to restore my phone, but I lost recent data. I just want to share this in case it helps others. If you’re updating to iOS 26, I’d strongly recommend making sure your iPhone, Photos, and WhatsApp data are backed up first.

Has anyone else run into a similar boot loop issue after iOS 26? If so, how did you get past it?

Update on mine: As you can read my previous reply here. I actually fixed my own phone. I connected with a rapid charger, clicked up and down fast and held power down till PC screen came on, used itunes and clicked restore. I could not use my backup. My backup was corrupted. Why are backups Corrupted? This should not be happening. I had to go through as setting up a new iphone but it did have my contacts after I signed into everything. I did have to download all my apps, but once signed in the Apple App, if you look you can find all your apps you have downloaded you just have to re-download them. But I restored it and it's not stuck in the endless loop of a white screen that says recovery on it.

I got a 16 pro max four months ago, it updated to IOS26 and I went to bed woke up to my phone stuck in a boot loop on the recovery screen that was an endless cycle. I went to Verizon, they ordered me a replacement, got it the next day, turned it on did a restore from my icloud, updated it and it immediately went into a boot loop again, same as my original new phone. Went back to Verizon, she called Apple, they do not know and are sending me a 3rd phone, yes a 3rd phone because I'm under warranty. I followed steps on itunes to try to restore my phone, didn't work, tried updating through itunes, didn't work either. Nothing is bringing these phones out of this endless loop. I did the volume up and down and hold the power button, didn't work either. Verizon also tried the same, nothing worked. We have been Apple users for 10 years, this should not be happening. This will make me second guess going with Apple. I have been without a phone for almost 5 days now.

It happened to me on 2 devices. I updated my 13 people max to iOS 26 only to be met with the boot loop. I decided it was just time for an upgrade but my 16 pro max fell into the same after installing iOS 26 during setup. the past two weeks have just been endless restoring. I hope apple dress the fact that this new update is tanking a lot of people's devices. My brand new 16 pro max still isn't running.

iPhone12pro move to iPhone17pro same issue, updated to latest system, stuck in "swipe up to update" loop.

i update iPhone12pro to iOS 26, same loop.

The current iOS is terrible, with various issues.

I have tried all methods, including using recovery mode to update on a Mac and updating with third-party tools, but none of them worked. Unless I choose to reset the system without saving my data, there is no other solution.
