Wired CarPlay won't connect iPhone 17 Pro Max after iOS 26 update

I got an iPhone 17 Pro Max at release yesterday, and I absolutely love this phone. It’s easily the best iPhone I’ve ever had. But as soon as I got in my car to leave the Apple Store, and I plugged my phone into my 2017 Ford Explorer like I always have with every other iPhone I’ve had, and CarPlay didn’t connect. I go into my CarPlay settings, and it doesn’t even show my car anymore. My phone registers that I’m plugging it in to something, because it starts charging, but I guess it just doesn’t recognize that it’s a car. Bluetooth works just fine for taking calls over the speakers, but CarPlay in a 2017 Explorer requires a tethered connection, and that’s what’s not working. What’s strange, is my iPhone 16 Pro Max that I was using on the way to the Apple Store, also running iOS 26.0, was working just fine.

This morning, I tried connecting my mother’s iPhone 16 Pro Max to CarPlay, and it, too, no longer works. I’ve tried using a different cable, restarting both the phone and the car, and even resetting all mobile phone settings on the car infotainment system. Nothing is working. I’m assuming this is an issue with iOS 26, and not so much the car, as there was never any issue before, but I wouldn’t know anything about figuring that out. I do know, it’s extremely inconvenient not having CarPlay.

In attempt to try solve this, I bought 10 different USB-A to Type-C cables in lengths from 50cm to 150cm

All of them worked with iPhone 16 Pro Max (and 15, 14, 13)

the 17 Pro Max only liked 4 of them, a 100cm long braided Mophie I bought from Apple online was one of them.

Note: The Beats cables from Apple did not work, none of them.

The other 3 that worked were no-name cheap Chinese cables, one 150cm and one 50cm and one 100cm, unbraided. One of them only connected when Type-C plug was in one direction, not when turned 180 degrees.

Note: The 17 Pro Max would start charging from all cables

Hopefully Apple learn from this and do some more certifications moving forward.

I do see some reports online from random users which could connect but got randomly disconnection from time to time. It will take a few days before I know how stable this is.

Apple: I now have a few cables I don't need. Let me know if you want to buy them - perhaps we can make a trade.

Happy to hear you got it working.

however - I highly doubt the cable you got with your phone is charge-only.

all our iPhone 17s came with a “charge cable” but it also provide data. As others in this thread has confirmed, their cable that came with the phone made CarPlay work again.

so dear Apple, for the sake of everyone, please make a fix and provide info to everyone what was the real reason for all this drama. No one likes a class action coming their way.

some in Apple confirm this is a known issue which is experienced by many, not only a handful. Whilst others in Apple are numb.

it is not even listed as a “known issue” - whilst we all know this is very wrong.

CarPlay Camry 2025 with iphone 17 pro = not working for me (it worked perfectly with iphone mini12)

AirPlay iphone 17 pro = not working for me (It also worked perfectly with iphone mini 12)

2 apple technicians (technician + its supervisor) spent a total of 2 hours trying to make air play work but they did not succeed.

Iphone mini 12 = great phone. Iphone 17 pro = a disaster

I just installed the latest iOS update 26.2 and my new iPhone 17 will still not sync to allow CarPlay.

One positive change I noted from the previous iOS 26.1 is the new update 26.2 my phone is now attempting to make some connection, as the screen flashes briefly and repeatedly trying to find my car, but still no successful sync.

I've tried all shared fixes with no success to resolve my issue.

If I'd know this was an issue I'd have never traded in my iPhone SE 3rd gen. Definitely NOT an improvement.

Apple, please help resolve this issue.

This is unacceptable. Ny Apple 11 iphone allowed HandsFree "CarPlay" to function with my 2015 Toyota. Now that I purchased Apple iPhone 16Pro, the 16 Pro will not allow Hands Free "CarPlay" to work- I am using the same automobile. OS system 26.3 should allow this transition.

Upgrades should be smarter and more efficient/versatile.

Apple is choosing upgrades to become less versatile/efficient!

This is a poor decision on Apple's part- BAD FORM! If Apple doesn't conform to the current economic issues, they will send their loyal customers elsewhere. Something to consider upon my next phone purchases for sure!

I have a 2019 Audi. Car play will stop playing for a beat or two when playing. Next it will lose the connection completely, still playing on phone, but no sound in vehicle. These are all new issues for my 17 iPhone (no issues with my old 11). So when will Apple address these constant any very annoying issues?? I thought I was getting a better phone in the 17, but so far it’s been nothing but problems and disappointing software issues.

So help me god i hope this works, I also have bought 6 cords. Updated my Subaru Forester 2020, updated phone 3 times, on Apple support 5 times, installed and un-installed phone 4 times with car. So f*%king ridiculous Apple. The phones are supposed to get better not worse. This will be my last hail Mary. I will cry a little but be forced to get a Samsung. This has been going on now for 6 weeks. I can't be working this hard for my phone. It supposed to be working for me. Thank you for this post.
