iPhone 17 Pro Max – Static / hissing noise from speaker while charging

I’ve noticed a strange issue on my iPhone 17 Pro Max and I’d like to know if anyone else can reproduce it.

When the phone is plugged in and charging, if you play some audio (for example a song, an Instagram Reel, or TikTok), turn the volume all the way down to mute, and then put your ear close to the bottom speaker, you can hear a faint static, buzzing, or hissing noise, similar to the sound of an old radio.

I’ve tested this with both an official Apple cable and charger, and the issue is still present. This sound can also be heard even when no audio is playing, although it’s a bit quieter in that case.

I’m curious if this is a widespread issue or specific to my device.

Hello everyone,

Also my brand new 17 pro max 512 make a grey noise when plugged in and I open the camera app.

I contacted a senior support engineer in apple using the official channel into the apple support app.

They called me and completed a full hardware diagnostics.

They tell me that Apple is aware of the issue and they are working to release a software update (by diagnostics there isn’t hardware fault).

Apple ask you to choose, wait for a software update or replace the phone (I rejected this solution, because of software issue. Also the replaced phone may have same noise problems).

My case is still open, and if the future software update doesn’t work they recall me for other options.

I swear these information are useful for the community :)

so… waiting the next buggyiOS26 release ;)

I'm sorry, this is the first time that I've seen this. I tried to duplicate your issue with my iPhone 17 Pro Max and was unable to hear the noise you describe. I couldn't hear anything, sorry. You are welcome to contact Apple Support or make a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple Store to have them listen if you can duplicate the issue. If you purchased from an Apple Store, you have 14 days to return the device, no questions asked.

I’m experiencing the same issue with my 17 Pro Max, which I picked up earlier this week. When the phone is charging and the screen is on, there’s a constant hissing noise coming from the bottom. The sound gets even louder when the camera is active — loud enough that the camera mic actually picks it up in video recordings.

Interestingly, it seems like this isn’t new. Every time a new iPhone launches, there are similar reports. For example, here’s a thread about the iPhone 12 Pro having the same issue: iPhone 12 Pro Static Noises - Apple Community.

I’m not sure if that turned out to be a software or hardware problem back then, but you’d think Apple might have learned a thing or two over the years, lol. I also checked social media across different regions, and it seems this issue is pretty widespread.

Hopefully this gets resolved soon… otherwise, I might have to return it next weekend.

This is a big widespread problem happening on all iPhones and Apple has not even made a comment or addressed it? Not good enough! This ain’t the only problem either it’s been an influx of problems after problems….

Anyone have any updates?

Just for the record Apple very rarely talks publicly about issues like this. It’s just not how they operate. If you open a support ticket and escalate your issue to higher support levels, support will individually address the issue. But a public statement, not a chance.

If you want a response from Apple open a support ticket on your device and escalate the issue so it gets to engineering. Good luck.

We need an official response from Apple on this matter. It is unacceptable that there are so many reports and no comment from them on the issue. Yesterday, I went to the Apple Store in Mexico City, and they refused to give me a replacement because they still don't have any replacement devices here. They only mentioned that they had “investigated” and that there are already several cases mentioning the same thing and that they would be waiting for a statement, but there is no date for this.

Yes, these are standard questions they ask in this case. Then they want photos of the phone, cable and power adapter. Next are videos of it being connected to the charger and disconnected. Unfortunately, after that there's no new relevant information.

I believe that people who sent back phones with a defect can insist on the cause and a detailed analysis, reproduction of the problem and whether the problem is attributed to software/hardware issue.

Also, remember that there are actually two issues with the noise:

  • from the left speaker while charging,
  • from the top of the phone after launching the camera (+ audible noise when playing back the video).

So double check if you're experiencing only one issue or all of them. If you've reported more than one, they may have prioritized only the charging issue, which as you can see is ongoing - so remind them of the second issue.
