iPhone 17 Pro Max – Static / hissing noise from speaker while charging

I’ve noticed a strange issue on my iPhone 17 Pro Max and I’d like to know if anyone else can reproduce it.

When the phone is plugged in and charging, if you play some audio (for example a song, an Instagram Reel, or TikTok), turn the volume all the way down to mute, and then put your ear close to the bottom speaker, you can hear a faint static, buzzing, or hissing noise, similar to the sound of an old radio.

I’ve tested this with both an official Apple cable and charger, and the issue is still present. This sound can also be heard even when no audio is playing, although it’s a bit quieter in that case.

I’m curious if this is a widespread issue or specific to my device.

Hello everyone,

Also my brand new 17 pro max 512 make a grey noise when plugged in and I open the camera app.

I contacted a senior support engineer in apple using the official channel into the apple support app.

They called me and completed a full hardware diagnostics.

They tell me that Apple is aware of the issue and they are working to release a software update (by diagnostics there isn’t hardware fault).

Apple ask you to choose, wait for a software update or replace the phone (I rejected this solution, because of software issue. Also the replaced phone may have same noise problems).

My case is still open, and if the future software update doesn’t work they recall me for other options.

I swear these information are useful for the community :)

so… waiting the next buggyiOS26 release ;)

Replacement stock is separate from retail stock. I understood what it was that you reported and did the best I could to duplicate your issue. The only thing I can say that I didn't do was use TikTok and never would have that on my device. I used Music and made several attempts with different music. Anything is possible, but I could not duplicate it on my device. If you do not want to see about a replacement that is up to you. You can wait to see if a software update would fix it. The Genius Bar cannot do anything with retail stock. You could ask the manager if they have a device like yours in stock and you could go in and make the return and purchase stock at the store, but I'm not sure if they would do that. Only the store management could answer that question. Good luck.

If you returned your first phone, did you specify that you wanted to be informed about the cause of the problem? They probably took it for testing and disassembly.

For those who have already replaced their phones: ask them to provide the cause of the issue. Regardless of whether the replacement device shows the same problem, this should help them analyze the situation if they've collected several affected phones by now. We still don’t officially know whether it’s a hardware or software issue. Keep asking.

I returned my replacement device because it had the same hissing/static noise issue. After that, an Apple senior engineer called me last Friday to gather more information. He said they’re still trying to determine whether the issue is software or hardware related.

He specifically asked me about:

  • The charging adapter I’m using
  • The cable
  • The phone case
  • The type of power outlet I plug into

He mentioned he’ll call me again today with an update, so I’ll share any new info here once I hear back.

Also, once they receive my returned replacement device, they said they’ll reassign the limited warranty back to my original iPhone.

I mentioned both issues , the hissing noise while charging from the left speaker and the noise from the top of the phone after launching the camera (especially during video playback). I even shared this exact Apple Discussion link with the senior engineer I spoke to. At that time, he said, “Yes, I can see that people are talking about the issue in the discussion forum,” but unfortunately, there hasn’t been much progress since then.

Today I contacted Apple again because they removed the limited 1-year warranty from my original phone and assigned it to the replacement device instead. I’ve already returned the replacement device, but my original phone still shows “coverage expired”, nothing has been restored yet.

Honestly, I don’t think they’re going to do anything meaningful about these issues. That’s just how I’m starting to feel at this point.

Same issue here.

I have an iPhone 17 Pro Max and when I plug it in to charge, I hear a very subtle static / hissing noise coming from the charging port.

It sounds like a radio static or a light steam-like noise.

The noise is not constant — it comes and goes in short intervals.

You can only hear it if you put your ear very close to the charging port, in a completely quiet room.

I am using the original Apple cable and charger.

Is this considered normal behavior or should I go to Apple Support for a check?

All of the new 17 pro and pro max have this problem. There are a lot of people that didn’t notice and a lot of apple fan boys that don’t care. We were called “people with OCD” because this problem is barely noticeable and that doesn’t make the phone unusable….no comments. I replaced 1 time, same, I’m waiting for the second third phone now but will arrive with the same problem. The thing is I have to return my old phone so I can’t replace it forever

That's good! I had a second scheduled call today, and they escalated my issue further, collected extended data from the iPhone, and forwarded my recordings of the noises. This is likely a software issue. It will take about four days to get a response from the developers.

The only thing is, I don't know what will happen with the noise coming from the back of the plateau (Camera), because the Apple employee prioritized the sound from the speaker next to the charging port. I'll definitely keep an eye on this.
