iPhone 17 Pro Max – Static / hissing noise from speaker while charging

I’ve noticed a strange issue on my iPhone 17 Pro Max and I’d like to know if anyone else can reproduce it.

When the phone is plugged in and charging, if you play some audio (for example a song, an Instagram Reel, or TikTok), turn the volume all the way down to mute, and then put your ear close to the bottom speaker, you can hear a faint static, buzzing, or hissing noise, similar to the sound of an old radio.

I’ve tested this with both an official Apple cable and charger, and the issue is still present. This sound can also be heard even when no audio is playing, although it’s a bit quieter in that case.

I’m curious if this is a widespread issue or specific to my device.

Hello everyone,

Also my brand new 17 pro max 512 make a grey noise when plugged in and I open the camera app.

I contacted a senior support engineer in apple using the official channel into the apple support app.

They called me and completed a full hardware diagnostics.

They tell me that Apple is aware of the issue and they are working to release a software update (by diagnostics there isn’t hardware fault).

Apple ask you to choose, wait for a software update or replace the phone (I rejected this solution, because of software issue. Also the replaced phone may have same noise problems).

My case is still open, and if the future software update doesn’t work they recall me for other options.

I swear these information are useful for the community :)

so… waiting the next buggyiOS26 release ;)

That's good! I had a second scheduled call today, and they escalated my issue further, collected extended data from the iPhone, and forwarded my recordings of the noises. This is likely a software issue. It will take about four days to get a response from the developers.

The only thing is, I don't know what will happen with the noise coming from the back of the plateau (Camera), because the Apple employee prioritized the sound from the speaker next to the charging port. I'll definitely keep an eye on this.

I have the exact same issue on iPhone 17 Pro Max, noticed immediately on day 1. Thought had faulty iPhone but this thread seems to prove it’s widespread. Watching to see what the resolution is. Software fix or hardware replacement after revised build. I hope it’s software fix but 26.0.1 didn’t fix for me. 26.1 in beta altho I don’t have access to it. Let’s see, fingers crossed.

I have the 17PM and also have this problem. Charging while using Safari and other applications and putting ear on the bottom speaker I can hear static noises. Top speaker also has weird buzz but not as loud.

When phone is unplugged from charger I am able to also hear very soft static noises almost not noticeable unless you have good ears.

This is a big widespread problem happening on all iPhones and Apple has not even made a comment or addressed it? Not good enough! This ain’t the only problem either it’s been an influx of problems after problems….

Anyone have any updates?

I got my iPhone 17 Pro Max 3 days ago, and got the same noise. When on charger, If some media happens, like a video that automatically plays, or scroll through some TikTok or Instagram videos in silence, the noise appears, from the left speaker. I have returned it to my mobile company, and they will check on it. Something I did not like is they said if this does not fall under guarantee then I will need to pay for some components if they decide to, which is crazy. Well for now, no iPhone 17 Pro Max for the coming 2 weeks.

I talked to the Apple Store, they tell me that it's a noise that shouldn't be there but checking my iPhone they didn't notice any hardware defects with tests, the fact is that they don't even know if it's a hardware or software problem, they tell me that the story has already been reported by someone else, and anyway I saw on another forum that a user replaced the iPhone but also the new one had this problem during the charge, so I don't know what to say...

Update:

Today I received the replacement device. It appears to be a new unit, but unfortunately, after setting it up I found that it has the exact same static / hissing noise issue while charging.

I contacted Apple again and explained that there’s no point in keeping the replacement since it has the same problem. The senior engineer told me that technically, you can’t return the replacement device if the box has been opened, to which I responded, how else can I check for the issue without opening it? They then advised me to repack it using the same box and send the replacement back to Apple, and once they receive it, they’ll release the $1,199 + tax hold on my credit card.

I also noticed that the 1-year limited coverage was transferred to the replacement device, and my original device now shows coverage as expired. I called the senior engineer again, and they told me this should automatically update once the replacement is received back.

So far, there’s still no real solution to this problem, and now there’s a double charge ($1,199 + tax for the original device and a temporary hold for the replacement), with both devices showing the same issue.

I spent almost 2 hours on the phone to apple and they promised to call me back the following day with an update after i spoke to the senior tech/engineer. As i expected, no phone call at all the next day. I work in electronics, and honestly i can't see a fix for it unless they redesign the phone. Im stunned that they let it get past quality control. Similar to the coil whine in the Nvidia video cards that they basically said is normal - i'm expecting if apple are ever forced to do a statement on this - they will play it down and say its normal.

I spent several hours with the support team over the past two weeks, but I received no feedback regarding the issue. They repeatedly asked me the same questions, requested photos and videos of the problem, and connected to my phone via screen share to conduct a thorough diagnostic. Despite their efforts, it appears that they are completely unaware of the cause of the problem. During the last call, they informed me that the ticket was escalating, and they scheduled a follow-up call today to finally give me a feedback. I will keep you updated as soon as I receive a call from them.

I received a call from support a few minutes ago, but unfortunately, I have not received any responses. They have requested another diagnostic file and a video of the issue. At this point, I believe they are uncertain about the next steps or the nature of the problem. They have scheduled another call with me for next Thursday to provide feedback. In my opinion, we should not expect a resolution in 26.1 as the issue has not been addressed yet.

Let me share my update: Apple support reached out to me multiple times, took several videos, and performed diagnostics, but they didn’t provide any meaningful feedback. Today, my local Apple Store confirmed that iOS 26.1 doesn’t resolve these issues. Apple has received numerous tickets for this problem and is still investigating it. It appears that all 17 Pro units have the camera noise, and the only hope is that future updates will filter out this noise and prevent it from being recorded in videos taken by the device.

Same with me, and my $3000 iPhone 17 Pro Max 1TB.

I’ve noticed the is for some time but didn’t gave it much attention, but now I searched the web and it seems like many people, if not everyone has it.

Anyway, I just submitted feedback with the problem…and maybe something will be done.

My iPhone only produces static from the bottom speaker, when connected to power via the included USB-C cable and an original Apple 20W USB-C wall adapter.

When I plug out the iPhone from charging the noise stops…at least that’s good. 😀😀😀😀

To be honest it’s not that bad…but I bet my money or everyone’s money didn’t made any static. 😭Our money was perfect…oh well.

Anyway, as long as my iPhone doesn’t go up in flames along with my home and me, because of this weird static… it’s ok and I can live with it. I don’t like it and it’s not right, but it’s not like Apple cares too much.

And I’m not in the mood to get a replacement and start moving all my 300GB of personal data again to a new iPhone. Even if they gave me the new one for a day, to move everything to it.

What a mess. 🏆
