Updated to Tahoe (macOS 26) and now printers do not print

I recently updated to macOS 26 Tahoe. Now, none of my printers work. Not the usb HP printer nor any network printers.

I reset the print system in Print Center and reinstalled the usb printer. No good. I deleted everything in /Library/Printers folder and reinstalled the printer. Still no good.

The error log reports a plethora of errors, but the all seem to be centered around File “/usr/libexec/cups/daemon/cups-deviced” has insecure permissions.

Please advise.

Okay, I had this problem too, and I read everything on the internet. I even did some of the terminal steps that one blog post recommended - if you are unfamiliar with terminal do not run these, and even if you are, they did not work.

I have just had a call with Apple Support, and I recommend folks to follow these steps, so you don't have to do everything I did to get my business back up and printing!

You've probably tried a few of these already, if you have, skip to the removing network and VPN (4 and 5)

  1. Reset the printing system (go to Printers and Scanners, then control+click the printers list and click reset printing system)
  2. Try to re-add the printer
  3. Try to re-add the printer via the IP option (you will need to get your printers IP address, use your printer for this, there should be a network configuration print report available somewhere in your manufacturers instructions)
  4. Check under your VPN settings -> If you have a VPN installed, remove it from your VPN configurations
  5. Check your network settings -> Remove your current network settings (save password beforehand or have it available), as in not just disconnect, but forget the network
  6. Reconnect to your network
  7. Try printing
  8. If printing works, re-add your VPN

For me, I tried all of these things, I've even run a re-install of MacOS. The steps that worked are 4 and 5, once I had done that, I was able to print again.

Some handy commands:

# Checks for any printers

lpstat -p

# Checks your local network for printers

dns-sd -B _printer._tcp

Offering my experience with the similar issue regarding an Apple MacOS update to Tahoe, full transparency I cannot identify which update. I'm currently on Tahoe 26.3.1. Had a very similar issue in that the print dialog for a HP LaserJet Pro M428f-M429f that worked perfectly over WIFI stopped printing from my MacBook Pro. I conducted many searches both on this site and others. One curious anomaly was the "Print on Both Sides of Paper" checkbox wasn't present in the printer dialog box. It made me curious about the possibility of the driver being incorrect. As noted, after seeing repeated posts in Apple related sites with a great deal of not helpful churn about privacy seeing and AirPrint discussions. I decided to go to the HP site and download the HP Driver (I read some discussion that seemed to indicate that Apple AirPrint over rides the HP Drivers(?) Would appreciate an Apple agent responding to this. Bad call on Apple's part). I downloaded and installed the driver and the "Print on Both Sides of Paper" checkbox re-appeard and I am once again able to print from my MacBook Pro to the HP LaserJet Pro M428f-M429f. I navigated to the HP Set up your new printer site and selected the second "Install HP EasySmart" since it included the print drivers. I am disappointment that Apple didn't offer this as a solution.

AirPrint is a driver like any other. When you set up a printer, you can choose whatever driver you want to use. Technically, all print drivers will override another if you choose it over the others.

See the “Use” option in the add printer guide. Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac - Apple Support

Seems like they offer it as a solution.

I would verify some settings—

>System Setting> Privacy & Security> Local Network toggle on all related

>System Setting> Printers & Scanners Show Printer Web Page;

if necessary make a security exception to continue Under Security> Certificates>Configure

Choose Create a New Self-Signed Certificate

(Edit the validity period if necessary) and click Finish

Reset print system if necessary:

If it is listed as AirPrint printer, delete the existing printer, and add it again, select AirPrint.

So, I've been dealing with this for a few weeks since I updated to Tahoe 26.1 and then 26.2. None of the printers at work would connect or print, and tech support was clueless. At home, my laser printer wouldn't connect as well (it connected, but would stay in "pause" mode). My home printer is a Brother Printer and work is Canon. Regardless, none of them worked until...

I dove in and uninstalled previous printers from the MacHD library. It seems like some of the third party printer identification programs - like PaperCut, for example - were preventing my current printers from completing the jobs. I'll check again at work tomorrow, but for my home printer (Brother), it seems to be working now without issue.
