Updated to Tahoe (macOS 26) and now printers do not print

I recently updated to macOS 26 Tahoe. Now, none of my printers work. Not the usb HP printer nor any network printers.

I reset the print system in Print Center and reinstalled the usb printer. No good. I deleted everything in /Library/Printers folder and reinstalled the printer. Still no good.

The error log reports a plethora of errors, but the all seem to be centered around File “/usr/libexec/cups/daemon/cups-deviced” has insecure permissions.

Please advise.

I would verify some settings—

>System Setting> Privacy & Security> Local Network toggle on all related

>System Setting> Printers & Scanners Show Printer Web Page;

if necessary make a security exception to continue Under Security> Certificates>Configure

Choose Create a New Self-Signed Certificate

(Edit the validity period if necessary) and click Finish

Reset print system if necessary:

If it is listed as AirPrint printer, delete the existing printer, and add it again, select AirPrint.

By the way, this is complete BS. How can Apple upgrade to either a major or minor upgrade version and not properly regression test? These printers aren't exactly ancient. Canon D570 and Canon Color imageclass MF656cdw. My Mac mini is now on Tahoe 26.5. I wish I'd known; I wouldn't have upgraded until they fixed this....

This is a printer manufacturer problem, not an Apple problem. Printer manufacturers seem intent on wanting to use proprietary drivers instead of using any sort of open standards.

Things are even worse for multi-function devices since the scanner portion usually requires its own separate proprietary driver.....again instead of using a standard such as TWAIN (IIRC, there may be another one as well).

Have you tried using Image Capture to initiate a scan?

I recently had to figure out how to get a donated multi-function working as I needed to determine whether it was even functional as well as compatible with Tahoe. Fortunately it was an AirPrint capable, but the scanner portion was not. It required installing the manufacturer's proprietary drive (outdated, yet somehow still could be partially installed to work the scanner).

Personally I will not purchase a device which requires a proprietary driver for these very reasons since a manufacturer can stop supporting the device at any time.

You can check whether VueScan supports your scanner.

I know my organization just had another issue with one user's printer. It seems the CUPS driver it was using was locked (printers.com.pre-update) & it required the Launch Agent/Daemon for CUPS to be restarted. The tech had already tried all previous troubleshooting steps that were successful previously so this was something new with 26.5.1 update.

You should contact the printer/scanner manufacturer for support since it is on them to make sure their product works with the systems it was advertised to support (watch out for the fine print in those sales brochures).

You can also contact the printer/scanner manufacturer to let them know your displeasure with their limited support & poor design for OS changes.

Same issue here since upgrading to MacOS 26.1 from 26. Printer is a HP Laserjet Pro M428 MFD). Spouses Mac is still on MacOS26 and it prints fine. My Windows 11 system also prints fine. iPhone prints to same printer just fine.

Something in the MacOS26.1 update has broken something.

To "The Fingers" - What solution are you referring to? I don't see a clearly identified solution in this thread.

I deleted the printer on my MPB 16" M1 Pro but could not find it again to add back. I installed the HP Software and it cannot find the printer plus it's a piece of crap.

The printer has an IP address that can be pinged or the embedded web interface brought up on a Windows 11 system just fine. On the MacOS 26.1 Mac, I cannot ping the printer in terminal or bring up the embedded web interface. Both again work on our MacOS 26 version which has downloaded the new update but we are not restarting it. I wish I knew how to delete the scheduled install. I read a few posts saying look for an update file in the applications folder or in the Library folder but nothing existed. I did a CLI "software update blah blah) and the latest I see listed is MacOS 26. The article I was reading indicated that the software update CLI command would list the downloaded update.

This leads to another question, when the Software Update section of System Preferences shows Scheduled, Restart now or Install tonight. Does that mean the downloaded update has already been installed and only a restart is needed or will is download when I initiate the restart?

Tons of old and unvalidated information out there.

This is the first time and many years that I will turn off future updates and delay install until much later.

Thank you leroydouglas. This worked for me. After the recent update to Tahoe 26.2 my old Epson ET2500 stopped printing. Everything seemed to be in order and in the print queue the job just hung, with the message "looking for printer". I went through all the obvious corrective actions but after seeing your post I checked in the local network setting and there was one setting (epson printer (rastertoescpll).app) where the slider was set to off. Sliding the switch to on immediately cured the problem.

Thanks again

I had to chat with Brother and ended up with a different driver ??? The only problem I had was with scanning. I kept getting the message there was no computer connected. But I was able to print!!

Printing and scanning use two different drivers. The printer manufacturer may bundle both drivers into one installer but just because you can print doesn’t mean you can scan. The scanner equivalent to AirPrint is called image capture architecture (ICA). That I see a driver could be embedded in the scanner firmware, so it may not require a separate driver.

Tried this. Downloaded latest drivers from Canon for printer (MF Printer Utilities - covering MacOS 10.15.7 - MacOS 26.2) and for scanner (MF Scanner Utilities - covering MacOS 10.15.7 - MacOS 26.2). Checked Privacy & Secuirity>Local Network settings: both were already toggled to "On".

Both printers still work. Both scanners still "not found".

My Config:

  • Mac mini m4
  • Mac OS: Tahoe 26.2
  • Multi-function Printers:
    • Canon imageCLASS D570
    • Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw

Then I deleted the drivers, re-downloaded the latest drivers from Canon, tried to re-install them, and then add them back in Settings. Prints but doesn't Scan. Can somebody help me?

Which driver did you install? The scanning driver is not the same as the printer. It may be bundled in one installer package, but they are not the same piece of software. The scanner portion must either support Image Capture Architecture (ICA) which uses the scan interface built into macOS (Image Capture) or the manufacturer must provide a native scanning driver and the scanning interface.

A device that supports AirPrint and ICA requires no drivers at all. However, it may require an ICA driver if not natively embedded in the firmware. You need to talk to canon.

I have a Xerox printer on my network. I have configured the printer using cups on a Mac mini running tahoe.

I can print to the cups queue from the mac mini itself, but after removing and re-adding the shared cups queue on my mac studio, also running tahoe, I can't print anything, getting an 'Invalid Certificate - check the printer for errors" in the print center queue on the studio.

Here's what's in /var/log/cups/access_log when I print to the queue:

localhost - - [02/Oct/2025:19:45:42 -0600] "POST /printers/BW HTTP/1.1" 200 1499 Create-Job successful-ok
localhost - - [02/Oct/2025:19:45:42 -0600] "POST /printers/BW HTTP/1.1" 200 8346 Send-Document successful-ok
localhost - - [02/Oct/2025:19:45:42 -0600] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 347 Set-Job-Attributes successful-ok
localhost - - [02/Oct/2025:19:45:43 -0600] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 401 169 CUPS-Get-Document successful-ok
localhost - david [02/Oct/2025:19:45:43 -0600] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 8265 CUPS-Get-Document successful-ok

There's no error, and nothing appears in the log on the mac mini.

On the mac studio there's several lines that look like this in the logs:

error	19:58:33.605496-0600	dnssd	Disabling saving preferences for { dnssd, <private>, current host, (null) } because home directory is inaccessible
error	19:58:33.637531-0600	ipp	Disabling saving preferences for { com.apple.ipp, <private>, any host, (null) } because home directory is inaccessible

Anybody have anything for me?

I am unable to get Microsoft Word to display a print dialog in Tahoe 26. I can print from Acrobat and Pages, but when I try to print from Word, the print dialog doesn't even pop up anymore. Everything worked fine for years until I upgraded to Tahoe 26, and yes, Word is updated. Exporting Word documents to PDF for printing changes formatting for some documents.

Additional info:

The issue only started when I upgraded FROM MacOS 26 to MacOS26.1 on a Mack Pro, M1 Pro 16.

We have another Mac running MacOS26.0 and it prints fine.

Printer is a HP Laserjet Pro M428 FWD.

This is outrageous that a security update prevents printing. My only other Mac has the update wiring to apply. I am not restarting in the hope that a fix will evolve. If not, I'll be back on Windows after a good run from 2010 on Mac.

I think this needs its own thread as my printing issue is only related to the 26.1 MacOS update.

Can Mr. Woo clarify if he's on 26.0 or 26.1? This matters.

I see my original post was edited by a moderator. I only wish Apple's engineering team were so quick to comment in these communities to acknowledge a problem and provide an ETA for a fix. I know, I have never seen this kinda proactive customer facing communications from Apple.
