all my photos are in heic format and I don't know how that happened. I can't upload to chatgpt. How can you fix them to be in jpeg format?

If they are not in Photos right-click them in Finder > Quick Actions > Convert Image > Format: JPEG
If they are not in Photos right-click them in Finder > Quick Actions > Convert Image > Format: JPEG
Are they in Photos? Then file -> Export and select Jpeg as 'kind'
If they are not in Photos you can do the same with Preview.
If the HEIC photos are not in your Photos library you can use this app from the App Store to convert them to JPEGs:
