Understand that, like you brain, a computer does not stop working when it goes to sleep. There are background maintenance processes that nee dot work, and apps that like to phone home when the computer is idle.

Plug in the computer whenever possible. There is no reason to worry about it. Leaving the computer plugged in will not damage the computer or the battery.

And why don't you shut down the computer when not in use?

Don't believe everything you hear. Shutting down the computer will have no negative impact on the battery.
