Battery replacement options for iPad mini 6th gen without AppleCare

I have an iPad mini 6th generation, purchased between 2022 to 2023. I do not have AppleCare coverage, but do have third-party insurance through Asurion. Recently, I’ve started noticing more severe battery and performance issues that I’m concerned will get worse as time goes by (iPad OS 26 has made these much more noticeable). I’m between going to my carrier and purchasing a brand new iPad mini A17 Pro, or opting for a battery replacement (or just replacing it through insurance, which may be higher cost than just replacing the battery). What options would I have at an Apple Store? What would be my best course of action, especially for a user that uses the device on a heavy basis (average of 8-12 hours daily) and always uses display accomodations (dark mode, invert colors, VoiceOver, etc.)?

Replacing your existing iPad for a much newer or current model iPad will always demonstrate a performance improvement. Many recent models have, in addition to more powerful CPU/GPU, increased RAM. If you are chasing improvements in performance and capability, replacement with a newer model iPad is likely your best option.

Assuming that your existing iPad is otherwise fully functional and undamaged, consider available trade-in options for your current iPad - as this may save you some money:

Apple Trade In - Apple

For practical purposes, for battery service of qualifying devices, Apple usually exchange the iPad for a renewed/refurbished iPad of the same model and specification. The cost of the exchange is the same as would otherwise be charged for battery replacement. When exchanged, the replacement iPad is yours to keep.

You can verify both eligibility and cost for your country/region here:

Exchanging the iPad is a quick and easy alternative - and if exchanged in store, is usually same day.

I’d also like to note that my reach states that, as of 2023, battery replacements were approx. $99 (my guess is this is no longer current, but I don’t know how/if warranty impacts this). Replacing through insurance would be around $250 (subject to availability). Purchasing the new iPad would cost around $50-100 for the taxes upfront, then whatever my installments would be until I could pay it off next year. I am hesitant to upgrade, mostly because it’s only a one-gen jump and I don’t think I’d notice much difference for specs and such, and it may just be better to get the current device swapped or “repaired.” Unless iPad OS 26 runs a lot smoother on the A17 Pro chip…
