I just traded in my iPhone 14 pro for the 17 pro because of my bird photography hobby. I'm impressed with how far in the zoom will go on the 17 pro, but not thrilled with the lack of consistent sharpness when zoomed in.
Wondering if anyone else is having this issue, or has suggestions?

Apple released iOS 26.0.1 on Monday. Among other things, it addressed a photo issue that occurs on iPhone 17 Pro. Hopefully your iOS is up to date.
iPhone has two different zooms, the Digital zoom and the Physical zoom. The Physical Zoom are the pre-set options you see in the bottom of the camera app that will physically zoom the camera in with the lens without affecting the quality of the photo. Once you go past that, it will switch to digital zoom, which is digitally cropping the image to zoom in further. That can go up to 40x and once you get there it's not a surprise the quality isn't the best. I hope this answers your question, or if you'd like to provide a photo or two.
Are you referring to 40X magnification? That’s pretty extreme and requires a tripod for the average user. Here’s a shot at 8X on iPhone 17 PM. This is about the limit really for handholding the iPhone.
I just tried zooming in all the way and the same flutter occurs for me. I think it's normal and because you're zoomed in so much it's much harder to stabilize. But a tip you can use is look at the top right grid when doing so and keep the yellow box on the subject, this will help stabilize. And thats a very nice photo of the squirrel!
And yes depending on the aspect ratio some photos will come in sideways.
Thank you… For the responses. I need to do a little bit more practicing… When I zoom all the way in like on a bird, the screen seems to flutter back-and-forth and maybe I need a tripod at that point. Anyway, I will attach a couple photos that I was hoping would be sharp and I don't consider them sharp. Of course the zoom is 1 million times better and tighter than my 14 Pro so I do realize that.
