Intermittent call audio issues on iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.7.1 despite good signal

My wife’s iPhone 15 Pro suddenly developed bad call performance. Specifically, the people on the other end of the call couldn’t hear her reliably—her sound would break up, as with a bad connection. We restarted the phone, no effect. Updated iOS to the latest (18.7.1), at first we thought it had fixed it but then the problem resumed. I thought maybe it was bad WiFi so we turned “WiFi calling” off, no improvement. We have premium Verizon with a consistent 2 bars of signal in the house. I thought maybe it was interference from background apps, so we closed every running app… no improvement. I don’t think it’s a clogged mic because sometimes the sound is just fine. Any suggestions before she pitches the phone through the window?

What has your carriers support team said about the issue? In nearly 40 years of using cell phones, call quality issues are almost always resolved by contacting the cellular carrier. Microphones don’t suddenly fix them selves, bugs don’t resolve themselves and reoccur again a day or two later.

Carrier issues do come and go for various reasons. Please contact your carrier, preferably at one of their corporate stores (not an authorized reseller) and request they diagnose your iPhone.

Yes, in my experience as a cell phone just dating back to late 1980’s when I experience poor call quality it’s a carrier issue. When iPhone 16 launched last year I had real issues with calls. AT&T tried to fix over the air but finally I took it to an actual AT&T store (not an Authorized Reseller) and they fixed it in 15 minutes and it’s been fine ever since. Good luck!
