It's way to easy to accidentally hit the silent button when putting the phone into or taking out of a pocket. Also, the phone seems to go into silent mode after connecting to CarPlay for a while.
Is there any way to change the settings so that a 3 second push is required to make a change to the silent mode?
So annoying. They should have kept the old style switch.

It was honestly just as easy to engage the older mute switch on iPhone. As it is, the Action Button requires you press and hold the button for at least more than a tap to engage it. But if you are accidentally holding the button long enough to engage the mute function, then it would be best to set it to no activity. No one here on this user to user only forum has any way to change how long you need hold the button for it to engage. Open Settings > Action Button and swipe through the options to the last action, which is No Action and then leave that page.
After you turn off the button, you can still easily mute your phone if you want, by swiping down from the upper right hand corner of your iPhone to open Control Center and tap the icon with a bell in it, which will mute your phone. Tap it again, unmutes your phone.
In addition to the great advice that lobsterghost1 provided, you already need to hold the button for 2 seconds minimum. To address your question about CarPlay, my guess is that it may be set to put your device into Driving Focus when you get into the vehicle. You can check that once you have CarPlay started and go into Settings in CarPlay, and there is a setting you can turn on or off to automatically turn on Driving Focus when you start up CarPlay.
