iPhone screen goes dark while using Waze despite Auto-Lock set to Never

My iphone auto locks when I am driving and my Waze map app goes dark. I have turned the phone on and off. I have turned the Auto lock feature to never and the screen display to always on. I dont have Apple Carplay feature so I have to rely on the phone screen which goes off after several minutes. It also does so when I’m using other apps as well. I have read prior post with the same issues but have not came across any solution that works for my phone.

Are there any planned updates to not turn off if the phone is set to not auto lock or something that can be controlled by the user?
