Cannot swipe up on iPhone 13 - is it the phone or OS glitch?

I just bought an unlocked used iPhone 13 in excellent condition. I updated immediately to iOS 26.0.1 so don't know if the problem existed prior.

When my phone sits for a bit, I am unable to swipe up and unlock it. I have tried pressing the Volume Up and Volume Down button and right side button and the screen goes black but the Apple logo never appears. I have also tried hard reset pressing the lower volume and right side buttons together and get the "Slide to Power Off" screen, but the slider doesn't work.

I have 30 days to return this phone, so I am trying to figure out:

1) Is it the phone?

2) Is this a known problem with iPhone 13?

3) Is it a problem with the update? (I don't think so because I have 1 other phone that I updates (a 2nd Gen SE) and my husband has a 2nd Gen SE and a 3rd Gen SE that were also updated and none of those phones have this problem.

I'm tired of dealing with this multiple times a day. It also presents a potentially dangerous situation if I can't get into my phone if I need to make an urgent call.

What's going on and is there a way to resolve it? If it is an iPhone 13 problem, and I return the phone, what other models have this problem so that I don't buy the same headache all over again?

I have a iPhone 12 also that I am going to test out - I haven't updated that one yet, so will make sure no problems with it and then will update it and hopefully will not have the same issue.

If this is a known issue with the iPhone 13, what's the fix?

Same issue for me with iOS 26 and iPhone 13 mini, and there are lots of reports online with this issue with iOS 26, so it’s more than likely not your hardware.

It started for me with the iOS upgrade from 18.x to 26.x, swiping up from bottom is super flakey. Probably only option is to submit a support ticket with Apple and attempt to escalate it so they address it (but don’t hold your breath given the ever-growing laundry list of usability issues in iOS 26… likely will be some time before this thing stabilizes).

Anyhow, in case it helps, this issue has occurred for me on all iOS 26.x.x updates since the release last month and is a persistent nagging issue for me as well. Sorry.

What you’re experiencing is not normal. If it were mine, I’d return it. Why put yourself through all that? If you don’t return it you need to have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

Sorry, two people out of millions using the same iOS update? Not likely. While millions of users do not visit daily, thousands and hundreds of thousands do daily. My same advice applies to you as well as the original poster./
