How do I delete a blank, unresponsive app icon on iPhone 17?

I have a blank app, no title, just a white square with lines and circles (see below). Pressing and holding on the app doesn't bring up any menu therefore there is no option to delete the app. The only thing I can do is move it around.

Is there any other way to delete the app?

I just found the answer in another topic and it worked. Kudos to @Divagrafica

Can't Delete Icon from Homescreen - Apple Community

Basically the steps are (from the article, with some modification by me):

  1. Click and hold the icon and when the screen wiggles, drag it until it's on a new page on its own.
  2. Go to that page.
  3. Touch an empty area of that page and hold, until it wiggles
  4. Click on the dots on the bottom of the screen.
  5. All the pages will now appear with a circle and a check mark under each. Click the check mark of the page with the icon you want to remove.
  6. The minus symbol (-) will appear. Click on the minus sign. The page and the icon will disappear.

Go to Settings and iPhone storage. Scroll to find the blank app. Tap on it and choose delete app. If that doesn’t work try restarting your phone. You can also enable the offload unused apps feature which will remove unused apps but keep their data. Please upvote if this helps!

I couldn't find a blank app. However I do have over 400 app so I'll have to keep looking.

I just had this same issue and managed to fix it:

steps to reproduce:

  • have multiple focus states
  • have the focus states have different enabled home pages (in our case, focusA will show homescreenA, focusB will show homescreenB, these are mutually exclusive, so focusA only sees homescreenA and vice versa)
  • Download an app while in focusA (the app should show up on homescreenA)
  • Switch to focusB
  • Go to the rightmost section (where apps are organized) and move your new app to homescreenB
  • delete the app (remove from device) from homescreenB (you should still be on focusB)
  • return to focusA, your app should still be there, but now it’s white, unnamed, and undeletable

The fix is to redownload the app and delete the second (or third) version. (You can likely do “remove from homescreen” over and over until there’s only one homescreen instance of the app. Then deletion should work)

I don’t know how they forgot to add a basic “for” loop to their deletion process, or how this made it through QA/QC, but this is a level of embarrassing that makes it harder to justify owning an iPhone.

That is an app that isn’t installed, and isn’t removed. Stuck.

Stuck can happen when an iPhone or iPad runs out of storage.

If the above suggestions don’t resolve the app, you’re headed for a backup, factory reset, and restore.

OK it's not lack of memory. Here is the background:

* I started off with an iPhone 13.

* I bought an iPhone 17 and set it up to transfer everything from the iPhone 13 (by placing them near each other).

* The blank app was on my iPhone 17.

* I later saw that the blank app was also on my iPhone 13.

* Both iPhones were 256K and about 50% full, so it's not due to a lack of storage.

I deleted a lot of apps until I had the bare minimum. The blank app isn't listed amongst the apps.

I backed up my iPhone 13 which has the same problem, erased it (Erase all Content and Settings under Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone), then restored from the backup. The blank app is still there.
