Real Mechanical Keyboard + Ext Monitor + MacBook Pro (lid closed): Need a external touchid reader.

I can't live without a tactile mechanical keyboard and a wide screen external monitor. I don't want another non-ergnomic, non-tactile slim apple keyboard with a touch id nor keep my macbook lid open to use the touchid sensor.

Is there any USB/bluetooth fingerprint reader/touchid sensor that works with my MacBook Pro that I can use near my keyboard for TouchID sensing?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 26.1

Apple Touch ID? No.

Closest analog? Use a token, or key card, or Watch (as mentioned):

I've seen instructions for removing the TouchID from an Apple Magic Keyboard (seems it can work with Bluetooth, but USB-C is more common), but it pretty much destroys the Magic Keyboard because it is just glued together. The TouchID cable, boards, and connectors are very fragile & easily damaged, so it is possible to lose $150 in the attempt with nothing to show for it other than personal experience & an expensive life lesson.

Seems people have 3D printer guides for a plastic enclosure for it as well. Unfortunately the forum moderators would likely remove any links I would post even though it is using all official Apple OEM electronic components. It is amazing how creative & inventive people are to fill a void & need.

I too have never liked Apple's keyboards, although the built-in keyboards used by the M2+ MBPros are one of the best Apple keyboards in a very long time. I do praise Apple from time to time....rare, but even Apple can have a moment.

I hate wearing watches. I don't find a reason to wear a watch anymore. Have you ever left anywhere without your phone? That's me - when I have my phone, I find no need for any other device to read the time from.

If allowing a third party to integrate with macbook for fingerprint reader is not possible, then I think, Apple must come up with a iPhone FaceID unlock/password-form-fill on the macbook. They can even validate physical location of the device for additional security to unlock.
