What does the number “5” mean in the iphone 16 pro model A3293?

I bought a iphone 16 pro 1Tb whose model number starts with the digit “5” (5YNT3ZD/A) How can I tell whether it’s new or refurbished? The device has never been activated, yet it shows a purchase date of January 1, 2007, and the service coverage expired on April 1, 2007.

Who can I contact about this issue? Apple phone support isn’t providing any information.

That unit is a demo model(which shouldn't have been sold) or has been refurbished by someone other than Apple in an Apple-approved program. Contact the store where you bought it.

Are you positive about that? My understanding is the 5 only means it was refurbished at an Apple Approved refurbisher and doesn't mean it's a demo unit.

the seller claims that this is a completely new phone.

The seller could claim the earth is flat, but that doesn't change reality. You bought a refurbished phone and there is no way to dispute that reality. Apple isn't going to do anything about the fact the phone was refurbished. If you're not happy with your purchase, return it to the seller for a refund.

4 other iPhone experts have told you that the phone was used in the past and has been reworked to make it appear like new. More experts may post to tell you the same thing.

If the phone was new, it would have a new warranty. The phone that you are asking about has no warranty....for a reason. It is not new. If the phone has any issues, you will pay for service and repairs.

The seller is lying to you if they are saying that the phone is new.

If you have already purchased the phone, you are due at least a $150-200 reimbursement because the phone has no warranty.

A new phone comes with a warranty. The phone that you are asking about has no warranty, meaning that the phone was used in the past, and was refurbished to make it appear like new.

You will have to pay for any service or repairs needed on the phone, because the warranty has already expired.

People have reported model numbers starting with 3 and 5; it's not clear which of those refers to a third-party refurbishment or a demo unit.

If someone bought a demo unit, it would still be under Apple's MDM, which would severely limit it's ability to work at all. If the phone in question here was able to be set up and functions normally, they just bought a refurbished phone, not by Apple directly, but one refurbished by an Apple Authorized Refurbisher.
