Some activities such as charging or a lot of computational activity (e.g., video), generate heat. Some warmth is to be anticipated.* ** "Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging.”*** Read this article about keeping your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

Consumers want newer device models with larger batteries (= more energy to be lost as heat) and faster charging. This means more heat is released over a shorter period of time, resulting in higher temperatures. If you do not like this, use a lower wattage charger which charges more slowly.

In terms of usage, changes in software such as upgrades may introduce new features which may add to power drain and heat generation. Check Settings > Battery to see if there are apps running that use a lot of power. If there are, decide if you can turn off a service such as Settings > General > Background app refresh when an app is in the background, or Settings > Privacy > Location Services. If you have just updated system software, read posts about indexing in this thread: iPhone 15 overheating - Apple Community

An iOS update may require subsequent reorganization of files and a short term increase in heat and battery drain until the task is done. Wait a few days and see if the issue persists.

Read this support article about iPhone battery and performance to learn about the battery health feature and what is considered normal performance --> iPhone battery and performance - Apple Support

To see the feature go to: Settings > Battery > Battery Health

"A normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles when operating under normal conditions. The one-year warranty includes service coverage for a defective battery. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers battery service for a charge." A degraded battery may display the notice: "Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity." If it is not at or above 80% "normal", consider contacting Apple about a battery replacement. --> iPhone Battery Replacement - Apple Support

According to the above quoted information, you could be losing almost 2% per month the entire first year before Apple would deem this to be unusual battery behavior and merit a warranty replacement.

You can call the official Apple Support and tell them about this issue. They can diagnose your device online to check your battery and other hardware.

You can find the phone number for your region on this Apple Support page:

Contact Apple Support by phone- Apple Support

Or visit an Authorised Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place to do so.

After I updated my iPhone started overheating and after overheating a few times it has spiral cracked inside the back glass. You can not feel the cracks because it is from overheating, NOT dropping. I feel Apple should replace my phone or fix it!!!!

When your phone overheats you see an alert on the screen with a thermometer and does not let you proceed. If that is not what you saw, then your phone did not overheat. Don't confuse that message with the one you see Fast Charging saying that charging is on hold to cool down before proceeding to fully charge. That one is normal and and stops fast charge at about 80% where you will see that message.

From what I can tell my phone gets hot when the camera app is up. The phone gets physically hot & when I feel that I close it down.
Only once I have gotten the charging message.

You're not reading all the great information provided in this thread. If you're not seeing a Thermometer on your screen with a notification the phone can't be used until it returns to a normal temperature, your iPhone is NOT overheating. There is no sort of overheating. And when you use the camera on an iPhone, it is one of most taxing activities a phone can do. And when you make the phone work hard, which taking photos does, batteries release heat in a process called thermo-exchange. This is completely normal. Other activities which will generate heat normally are: Streaming Videos/Music; Playing Games; Making and receiving phone calls; Video calls; Surfing the internet, etc. These ALL make the battery work harder, which generates heat.

All normal, and your phone has not overheated. What I mean by not being able to proceed is that the only thing you will see on the screen is the thermometer saying you cannot continue to use your phone. The only thing that is allowed is to make an Emergency Call. Review the link that was provided, it explains it quite well.

Hi ryonn, I seem to have the same issue as you with my 14 pro max. And tonight I didn’t shut my camera app down fast enough and thus my back glass cracked from the heat.

IMO the update has caused issues with my camera and my phone getting hot enough to crack.

So far response have been unhelpful and telling me my phone did not over heat, but I think if it is hot enough to crack your back glass… that’s over heating. Hopefully you have better results in finding answers.

Even those users who had their devices overheat where they saw the message did not have the glass crack. The warning is commonly seen when the device is left in the sun. Your back glass cracked and are assuming it is from heat. Yes your iPhone is going to get warm (or even hot as titled by the Support Article) when using the Camera among other uses and states:

  •  If your device doesn't display a temperature warning, you can keep using your device.

If you have AppleCare+, the cost of replacement is $29. Think of the millions of iPhone 14's out there where the camera is one of the most used apps and if that caused the back glass to crack it would be the top story on every news network. That simply is not the case. You are free to contact Apple here if you wish:
