Albums On iPhone Grouped Within ‘?’ Group After Updating iPhone Via MacBook Pro

I have just been syncing my iPhone 17 Pro Max with my MacBook Pro’s Apple Music library

When I connected my iPhone to my MacBook Pro a window appeared on my MacBook Pro saying something along the lines of ‘New software needs to be installed for your iPhone’

I chose to install this software

Now, after syncing my music library to my iPhone, a lot of albums are being shown in the ‘?’ group when viewing my music in the album view on my iPhone

This wasn’t the case before I chose to install the new iPhone software

Does anyone know how I can make all the albums on my iPhone show within the correct letter group again (eg Aaliyah’s albums within the ‘A’ group etc)?

Thanks for any help, Tim

Fix songs under “?” You will find many under # too.

These usually have weird characters or broken metadata.

Do this on your iPhone/iPad or Mac:

On iPhone / iPad

  1. Open Apple Music → go to Library → Songs.
  2. Find a song in ?.
  3. Tap and hold the song → Edit Song Info (if available) or check the album.
  4. If you can’t edit on iPhone, use a Mac (next section).

On Mac (most reliable)

  1. Open Music app.
  2. Find the songs under ?.
  3. Right-click → Get Info.
  4. Check:
    1. Song name (no blank spaces at start)
    2. Remove odd symbols/emoji at the beginning
    3. Make sure the title actually starts with a normal letter or valid character
  5. Click OK.

The song will immediately move to the correct alphabetical section.

You may have noticed it after an update.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

Thanks very much for your reply, I really appreciate it

I will check the metadata of the problem songs/albums when I’m next on my MacBook Pro

But because these songs/albums were showing within the correct letter section on my iPhone before I installed the update that my MacBook suggested I suspect the metadata will be correct

Thanks again for the suggestion and if you have any other ideas I would really appreciate hearing them

Tim
