App to digitize multiple photos from a single scan

Hello, like many people of my age I have a large number of old pre-digital photograph files, and started some years ago to photograph the pages picture by picture but stopped because it was just too long process.

Many years later I’m now wondering whether there is an app that can take a picture of a full A4 page containing say four separate photographs, recognise them as four separate photographs, separate them, process them and digitise them as four individual digital images … basically just to speed up the whole process.

if anybody can recommend a suitable application, I would be most grateful. 🙏

You omit to say on what hardware or which system version.

On my Mac I use Apple's own Image Capture which is automatically on a computer with macOS (in my case Sequoia). Select Show Details and then Auto Selection > Detect Separate Items

I do this with a Brother scanner and I don't know if the options are scanner dependent.

Well that's interesting. I've scanned some "Baby Books" from some ancestors, and they have several pictures on a page, often at funny angles. I've been dreading trying to separate them Do you think that this app can do that? Is it worth a try for this?

Image Capture does have manual image adjustment but when I tried looking into it the app repeatedly crashed when I change from automatic to manual adjustment. [Edit: I had the scanner set to grayscale and it did that. I changed to color and it worked.]

The Photos app has an automatic image enhancement feature, but I never use Photos so I don't know what it does.

There may be a third party app that does everything you want but unless somebody happens to read your post who is familiar with it you may need to start searching the web in general.

Again using the configuration I have with Image Capture there are handles on each image that let you find tune things, including adjusting angles.

I have seen good things about Vuescan but the annual fee for using it is a bit steep for the dozen or so scans I actually do per year. Again, that is per year. It's not a buy once and then use for 5 years kind of thing.
