How to fix Siri's 'connection problem' with Apple Music playback after iOS 26.1 update?

Siri keeps giving a “connection problem” when trying to play songs on Apple Music since iOS 26.1

Hi all,

Since updating my iPhone to iOS 26.1 (something I really regret doing), Siri has stopped being able to play any songs on Apple Music. Every time I say:

“Hey Siri, play [song] on Apple Music”

Siri replies:

“I’m having a problem with the connection. Please try again later.”

There is no connection issue. Wi-Fi and mobile data work perfectly. The same song plays immediately if I search for it manually in Apple Music.

Here’s what I’ve already tried, with no success:

  • Restarted the iPhone
  • Reset network settings
  • Signed out/in of Apple Music
  • Toggled “Learn from this App”
  • Checked all permissions
  • Forced restart
  • Both Wi-Fi and mobile data

Siri can still do everything else (weather, messages, timers, HomeKit). The problem is specifically Siri → Apple Music playback.

This is really annoying as I use this feature to control music when driving.

Is anyone else seeing this after updating to iOS 26.1?

It’s been happening 100% of the time for me.

Thanks!

J.

**PROBLEM SOLVED**

Switch off Concept on Demand under VPN settings.

Connect On Demand” can silently interfere with Siri because Siri doesn’t just send a single network request — it uses a sequence of small, rapid requests to Apple’s servers. When “Connect On Demand” is enabled, iOS sometimes tries to re-establish or refresh the VPN tunnel at the moment Siri initiates its requests. That brief micro-pause or handshake can make Siri think the network is unavailable, even though the overall connection is fine.

So Siri throws the generic error:

“I’m having a problem with the connection…”

Meanwhile, manually playing the song works because Music.app retries, while Siri does not.

📌 Why this likely happened after updating iOS 26.1

You’re also almost certainly right about this part:

“Maybe it was off when I was using previous iOS and the update enabled it.”

This is something that does happen after major updates:

  • iOS sometimes re-applies default VPN settings during an OS migration.

  • Some VPN apps quietly reinstall their configuration profiles after an update, which can re-enable On Demand.

  • iOS 26.* reshuffles some networking behaviours, so settings can get nudged back to defaults.

So your fix wasn’t random — it fits the pattern of what iOS updates occasionally do to VPN profiles.

📱 Is this a known iOS 26.* bug?

There isn’t a widely-reported Siri + VPN regression yet, but the behaviour you hit is completely consistent with VPN On Demand handshake delays. It’s possible that:

  • iOS 26.1 made the tunnel handshake slightly slower, or

  • Siri became slightly less tolerant of micro-interruptions.

Either way, toggling off “Connect On Demand” is the correct fix in this scenario.

If it happens again…

You now have the definitive workaround:

Settings → VPN → (your VPN) → turn off “Connect On Demand”

You can still keep the VPN on manually without Siri complaining.

Hi J.,

I’ve seen a few reports of Siri having trouble with Apple Music after iOS updates. Since you’ve already tried the usual fixes (restart, network reset, sign out/in, etc.), it may be a software bug in iOS 26.1.

A couple of things you could try:

  • Check for any iOS updates — sometimes Apple releases a minor patch quickly to fix issues like this.
  • Disable and re-enable Siri & Apple Music in Settings:
    • Go to Settings → Siri & Search → Apple Music, turn off, then back on.
  • Try asking Siri to play music by a different phrasing, e.g., “Play [song] in my library” instead of “on Apple Music,” just to see if it’s a command parsing issue.

If none of these help, it might need a bug fix from Apple. You can report it via Settings → Feedback so it gets logged.

Hopefully this gets you back to hands-free music soon!

So…

I’ve just visited my local Apple Store. I tried the “Hey Siri, play [song] on Apple Music”, right before I went in and it didn’t work. As soon as I demonstrated the problem to the, very helpful, guy on the tech bar it worked 🤣.

I’m guessing it’s because I was connected to their network. There is nothing wrong with any of my networks but, I do have a VPN constantly on which he said was the problem.

Weird as it was never a problem before I updated to iOS 23.* and the VPN has been on for months.

Oh well. At least it’s sorted.
