IOS and iPadOS no longer have access to Google and Microsoft shared drives/libraries - why?!

On iOS and iPadOS (latest versions 18.6.2) my access to Google Shared Drives / Library and OneDrive Shared Drives/Library has disappeared. It was always there previously. I can only connect to the ‘personal drive’.

Can someone up the Apple engineering chain please explain why and what you have done. I have read a post about this being removed at version 17 - why?!?!

Please put the access back.

At the time of writing, iOS/iPadOS 18.7.2 is current. If you haven't already done so, you should update your devices.

I'm not sure that I fully understand your comments vis "Shared Drives / Library" being removed - or from precisely where these are seemingly absent.

Be aware that visibility of Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage, within the Apple Files App (and associated installed Apps on your iPad), is entirely reliant upon the corresponding [Google] Drive App and [Microsoft] OneDrive App being installed on your iPad - these Apps providing integration with iOS/iPadOS. Unless these third-party Apps are installed on your device, you'll not be able to directly access files stored in these third-party cloud storage providers from Files.

With the corresponding Apps installed on your device, provider-specific cloud file-storage can be accessed by iOS/iPadOS (as determined by the respective App Developer) in addition to any extended access (such as libraries) that is offered from the corresponding third-party App.

When using the Apple Files App, third-party cloud storage providers will be visible from the Files App sidebar:

Perhaps the iOS versions may need an update, should they

be not current within their own series; latest is iOS 18.7.3.

{Support article below shows both latest iOS versions.}

However iDevices might naturally be capable of a higher

upgrade to latest iOS26.2, may try and make that jump.

Mine's not capable of upgrade to iOS26.x --it's an XR.

Thanks for the heads up Lotus, as its Apple I assumed the opposite. However never used this particular forum before. Noted no engineers to see this.

I’ve been in IT for 30 years so au fait with inner workings. Files app, G Drive and OneDrive App all installed, no change for years and as I say, was working with Shared Drive access up until v17 update.

As per your screenshot, see from my own screenshot I run multiple instances of OneDrive and other storage apps. The issues arise on shared libraries/drives not being available in the Files app and thus not available when trying to save files from various other apps (like WhatsApp or Outlook) …those drive resources are not available, but the ‘personal’ drive source is (Google and Microsoft differentiate between these. Shared drives - not to be confused with a shared file or shared folder, that’s a different type of share).

There is no ‘manage’ option in iOS Google Drive for the shared library. So either Apple has restrained it OR. Google have removed the functionality.

Everything is installed correctly, the only thing that has changed is iOS and iPadOS

You make reference to using multiple instances of OneDrive and other storage Apps. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but it remains unclear as to what you are explicitly attempting to achieve - and whether or not you are accessing multiple cloud accounts from the same provider.

To reiterate an earlier point, native integration of external cloud storage providers with iPadOS requires installation of appropriate "helper Apps" - such as MS OneDrive and Google Drive Apps. The helper Apps provide the APIs used by iPadOS to access associated cloud storage.

To access files, you must obviously be signed-in to the associated cloud account(s). Both the OneDrive and Google Drive Apps allow you to sign-in to a single account with that provider. As such, you'll not be able to sign-in to multiple accounts, from the same provider, using the helper-App mechanism. This is a limitation of the third-party provider's App; not Apple; attempting to run multiple instances of the same helper-App will not bypass this imposed limitation.

There is a potential workaround - but at the expense of full native integration with iPadOS. Some third-party File Manager Apps offer considerably more flexibility with external cloud services. Instead of attempting to integrate Google and MS cloud storage at an OS-level, using a "helper App", some third-party File Manager Apps can instead access Google/MS and other external storage/cloud providers resources directly. Using a File Manager allows you to sign-in to multiple accounts from the same provider - and as such bypass many of the functional limitations imposed by iOS/iPadOS and cloud provider helper Apps.

If this is the issue that you have encountered, one such File Manager App that may help with your difficulty is FileBrowser Professional by Stratospherix:

This is an App that I both use and recommend for use by advanced users with more complex needs for easy access to (and management of) external and cloud storage. Here is a redacted screenshot that illustrates simultaneous connection to multiple cloud providers/accounts, connected USB storage etc and local folders:

You would be well advised to review the extensive online Manual and help files to determine suitability for your needs.

Thank you Lotus. I updated to iOS v26 and it seems I now have access to OneDrive Libraries. Just to correct you in one point (if I understood you correctly): you can be logged in to multiple storage resources at the same time and they are all available at any one point in time.

So the conduit for Microsoft is now there, but the conduit for Google Shared Libraries has not returned. This tells me that either Google have not updated their App to new protocols introduced by Apple or that Apple have not approved Google’s update.

Thanks for your suggestion re alt files app but that is not the issue I’m facing. I can access thr shared lubrary within Google Drive app but I can’t acres the library from within other apps as a storage location - that is the issue.

As shown in the Google Drive app screenshot below, “Shared Drives” is NOT available as a storage source to save files to from any other app that allows file saving

Perhaps I wasn’t clear. The native Files App doesn’t itself restrict the number of external storage providers or connected USB devices.

The limitations to which I refer are those created by the installed helper-Apps that provide integration with the device - such as Google Drive - that permits you to be signed-in to a single account.

As such, the Files App access one Google Drive Account simultaneously with OneDrive (single MS Account) and other cloud providers / connected USB storage.

Merry Xmas.
