My son and his wife started a family thread on Messages. I am receiving the messages on my Desktop iMac and my iPhone 12 mini. However, even though I receive texts on my iPhone, I can't send a message from it, there's no space where the cursor shows up, no place to write. On my iMac it works fine; I can send and receive.

Have you tried force restating your iPhone? Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
Also try leaving and rejoining the group, or if possible creating a new one.
For some people, it has worked to remove and re-add the keyboard: Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Then delete and re-add the affected keyboard.
