Ricoh MP C2003 PS on macOS: Printing fails, 'Data Error

I’m having an issue with a network printer (RICOH MP C2003 PS) on macOS and would appreciate any help.

The printer is properly connected to the network and is reachable via ping. When I send a print job, it reaches the printer, but it does not print. On the printer’s display, it shows “Data Error”.

Details:

• Printer model: RICOH MP C2003 PS

• Connection: Network (LAN)

• OS: macOS

• Driver: Official macOS driver installed

Issues observed:

• Print jobs reach the printer but do not print

• Printer display shows “Data Error”

• macOS sometimes shows “Out of Paper”, which is incorrect

• Printer has paper loaded and is otherwise operational

Troubleshooting already done:

• Restarted printer and Mac

• Reinstalled printer driver

• Verified network connectivity (ping works)

Note: User code is also added. but doesn't print either.

Despite this, the issue persists.

Has anyone encountered this problem with Ricoh printers on macOS? Any suggestions regarding driver compatibility, PDL (PS/PCL), or printer settings would be greatly appreciated.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.6

This drive installed.

the printer shows data error : 91

The printer driver is PPD version 3.10.0.0, yes? (Ricoh Support)

See Ricoh's info re: "data error: 91" and solution. However, the solution might be bewildering, so see "How to fix Ricoh Error Code 91". I will add that in her power cycle Method 1 to include unplugging the printer and "a while rest" is at least 15 minutes.

Based on the Ricoh printer model and the cause of the error, I assume you're in a workplace setting that has other printers. You stated the ability to ping the IP address, but is the device you are trying to print the one you think it is? Could that IP address be a different address within the workplace? Re-check the IP address directly on the printer itself.

Other possible solutions:

  1. n the Add Printer window, try "Generic PCL Printer" in the Use option instead of "RICOH MP C2003 PS" shown in your screen shot original post. (Reference this posted solution.)
  2. Try HP Jetdirect - Socket for the Protocol instead of IPP and LPD. (Reference a Reddit convo.)

If none of the above helps and you are in a workplace setting, then reach out the IT department.

Consider for the Protocol try using "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" instead of Internet Printing Protocol - IPP.

According to the spectacularly scattershot Ricoh documentation, that printer supports AirPrint.

Try that path.

Print wirelessly from your Mac to your printer - Apple Support

You may need to reset the printer or the printer networking to get it to re-generate a certificate, if the printer does not handle that automatically.

This printer might support a web administration interface, but documentation for that and for updating the firmware is lacking. See if you csn log into the printer’s web administration interface and check for updated firmware.

So no IPP/IPPS support, no LPR/LPD support, no AirPrint support, or that support doesn’t work, and the vendor drivers and current vendor firmware are all non-functional? (And he doc and website less than helpful, based on a quick look.)

You’re left with a discussion with vendor support; with Ricoh.

Failing all that, in technical terms, you have a brick.

Some considerations for a replacement: Which Printer Should I Buy? - Apple Community

Local preference is a Brother laser with AirPrint, or a Brother laser multifunction with AirPrint, and probably also with IPP/IPPS printing, and with ICA and TWAIN for scanning. Whatever you do pick, you do want AirPrint support, and ICA and TWAIN support for scanning.
