MacBook Pro crashes (WindowServer) after update

My MacBook Pro Intel keeps crashing / restarting without me doing anything. I get an error report stating a "WindowServer" problem. This has happened only after updating to Mac OS Tahoe 26.2.

Can /should I try to reinstall Mac OS Sequoia?

May be related to a third party process that is running on your computer and causing a conflict with the OS. The WindowServer is a catch all for many processes that crash and will cause a restart. If you have installed any AntiVirus, VPN, Cleaners (CleanMyMac or similar), then you should remove them and test again. After that I would recommend posting the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting, and that will give much more details about the crashes on your computer along with the processes launching on startup.

Downgrading to Sequoia is possible, but not easy. A clean install of either OS would wipe the drive and remove the third party processes that may be causing the problem. The choice is yours on whether you want to Factory Reset to start fresh and install applications again one at a time or try removing the processes identified in the EtreCheck report. I would not recommend a complete restore from backup if you choose the Factory Reset, because that would just load the problem files back and you would be in the same situation.

Thank you very much. I removed some programs from the list of third-party software running in the background. After I removed the Zoom desktop app and disabled it in the list of startup items, the problem appears to be gone (computer no longer reboots when going into sleep mode). After reinstalling the Zoom App it appeared again.

Thanks. I will check that. It also seems that the problem (reboot upon entering sleep) only appears when the computer is connected to power, not in battery mode.

That sounds like it may be a hardware issue with the laptop's USB-C port. Does it occur using the other USB-C ports as well especially on the other side of the laptop? The EtreCheck report may help confirm.

Interesting. Most folks who are running software like Zoom are not seeing it crash their Mac. something else must be contributing to your instability.

As Mac Jim ID suggested above, consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It changes NOTHING. Etrecheck was developed by a senior contributor here, and uses mostly system calls and simple tests to collect often-needed information.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed. Because less can be learned when your Mac is running great, best time to run is when your problems are actually occurring, if possible.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the System ClipBoard, then Pasted into an ‘Additional Text’ window in a reply on the forums.

Use Etrecheck Pro for free:

The amount of data you get can be daunting. If you POST your report, some Readers here are willing to look over those reports, and can provide valuable insights.
