How to make Keynote animations overlap?

In the Keynote app, how to add a negative delay/offset to an animation?

In some cases, I would like that the next animation start before the current ends. I thought that using a negative delay to the animation would solve that problem, but it’s not possible.

How can I achieve this?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 15.7

You're right, there's no support for negative delays, you'll have to work the other way.

In Inspector -> Animate, click the Build Order button at the bottom. In the pop-up window you'll see a list of the objects on the page that have an action attached to them, and you can adjust the timing from here.

For the first object, it may be set to start automatically, or on click, as you prefer.

For the second object, you can set it to start 'With Build 1', and add a delay.

So, for example, if the first object has a 10-second animation and you want the second object to start half way through, you'll add a 5-second delay to the second object. Object 2's timer starts at the same time as Object 1 (because you have it set 'With Build 1'), but it's delayed by 5 seconds.

So you will have to do the math, but it should give you the effect you want.

Thank you very much. That's exactly what I was looking for!

As a side note, when animating objects this way, the delay you enter should be measured from the start of the previous object, not from the original starting point.

For example: Say you have 3 objects, each with a 2 sec. animation. If you animate Object 2 and Object 3 'with Build 1' and want 0.5 sec. delays between their starting points, you'd set a 0.5 sec. delay for Object 2 and another 0.5 sec. delay for Object 3.

You wouldn't use 0.5 sec. for Object 2 and 1 sec. for Object 3. Which could seem more logical as they both start ‘with Build 1’.

Thx again!
