Messages in iCloud: How settings affect storage space

Good day, I know this has probably asked to death but when it comes to iCloud storage and messages taking up space I wanna understand a couple things. So for starters, my iPhone is my

main unit, I don’t backup to cloud I do it on my computer, it’s my main unit tho, iMessage iCloud is enabled and messages are set to store forever. Now my iMac has the same as well as my iPad and an old MacBook. Now, that MacBook, if I turn it off on there will that free space? Even my iPad?

Next is the whole store messages forever, now say on my phone I set it for a year, will that delete all messages off my phone that are over a year or how does that work exactly. Like I said I back up the phone to my computer but I do like the messages backed to cloud as well in case I don’t backk my phone up regularly at times.

I get I’m sure I’ll get told just to buy storage but truthfully don’t need or want to, it’s just my messages is chewing up my cloud, 47 gig of 50. Don’t wanna start turned things off or changing settings till I understand more. Thank you for your time

No. As all of your messages are synced to iCloud. You would need to turn off sync on all devices and delete the cloud data.

Also if I set to say save message for a year, so all old messages beyond a year will be delete off the cloud then right, but will they remain on my phone ?

No. the messages older than 1 year would be deleted everywhere.

If you enable messages in iCloud and set messages to retain to one year on any device, it will update the setting on all devices. If you disable hit on any device, that device will no longer sync; it will not save iCloud storage space as your messages are already in iCloud. If your concern issues space either, rent additional space or delete messages (especially those with large attachments).
