iPhone 13: Slow apps, Face ID issues after iOS 26 update

ios26 has created several problems in my iPhone13. Several apps open very slowly or not at all. Also Face ID stopped working, doesn’t recognise my face. Can’t make it redundant. Very irritating and inconvenient.

There could be several factors at play. Depending on how long you've owned your iPhone 13, the battery could be failing as they don't last forever. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health - If it is at or below 80%, the useful life of the battery has been used and it would be time to pay Apple to replace the battery in your iPhone.

See this if Face ID isn't working, which can often be a hardware issue --> If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro - Apple Support

Next, iPhone Storage. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage - you need to make sure you have at least 10GB available at all times. If you have less available, it can cause things to slow down or not run at all. If you need more space, you'll have to delete things you don't need or use, like Apps, Photos, Music, Videos, Messages, Email, etc.

On a final note, I Force Restart my iPhone immediately after every iOS update. Did or do you do this --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes need to have VPN to be removed and reinstalled. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

Have you force-restarted your iPhone?

Have you tried a forced restart:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo (this might take longer than 10 seconds).

The operative word here is QUICKLY for the first two buttons, then a long hold for the SIDE button; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky. If done correctly this will always work unless the phone has a hardware problem.
