Okay, problem solved.

It turns out that Apple does not allow the same password for my iMac and Apple-account. I somehow succeeded in changing my Apple-account password on one of my other devices to the same password as my iMac. Then my iMac got 'confused' and started to give messages with problems.

Thanks for thinking with me!

Opps, I missed that. Sorry.

Try booting into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the password is accepted. If it's successful boot normally and try again.

Note:  if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode.  This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

take the suspect (Mac) out of the loop (for now)

are you able to login to iCloud.com (as one example) from another device

this is to verify your correct appleid credentials — the copy/paste to rule out typo

is what I’m saying

i once had my master text document typoed (transposed characters) - was driving me crazy

again, screenshots may tell a different story…

A screenshot of the prompt may be useful as second set of eyes

some prompts call for user login PW - I enter my Apple ID (it chokes)

have you verified your Apple ID by logging into iCloud (for example)

I work this by typing my PW in text (a folder name), then copy/paste that into the login prompt - to rule out typo

but I use long complicated generated PWs…
