Intercom not available through HomePods

Hi all. I'm having issues with my HomePod's not being able to use the Intercom function. I click on the synbol in the Home app to send an intercom message and am met the message 'unavailable, can't connect to any HomePod speakers'. Does anyone have a solution to resolve this? All on the same network, software up to date.

if it was me then my first troubleshooting step would be

to disconnect the homepods from ac power and reconnect them


and if you use an ios device to access the feature then force restart said ios device

maybe also the wifi router (in terms of a restart)
