Need simple single-key shortcut to toggle Zoom on iMac

I need help finding a way to create a single-key (or icon/shortcut) that toggles zoom on/off. Nothing I have tried has worked. I am trying to help an elderly friend who is losing his eyesight and has been using his iMac for years - zoom really helps but he can't reliably remember the keystrokes for it.

I have tried using function keys but it involves changing to standard keys which would require him to use fn to access volume/brightness and so on after years of not doing that. This will confuse him.

I need a very simple toggle that's easy to use and remember. Can anyone help, please?

Go to System Settings > type in zoom > settings>select use keyboard shortcuts to zoom.

On the right side switch on "Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom".

On the next line select "Modifier key for scroll gesture". For example use the Control key.

After selections are made, exit out of the system setting.

Press the control key and scroll up on the mouse to zoom in and scroll down to zoom out.
