iPhone 13 Pro Max: No sound for calls, texts, notifications

Recently I've been missing phone calls, texts and other notifications on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I discovered that the sound was not coming through.

  • The side slider button is off (not orange, silent mode is OFF)
  • Focus is OFF
  • Change with buttons (sounds & Haptics) is OFF
  • Ringtone and Alerts volume slider is all the way up
  • Reduce loud sounds is OFF
  • Volume limit is OFF
  • Restarted multiple times
  • On iOS 26.2 (not on the beta program)

The only way that alerts, rings and notifications can be heard, is if I use the side volume buttons and turn it on.....however shouldn't this only be controlling the media volume separately from the system notifications?

This is usually an iOS bug, not something you missed. Alerts could get “stuck” at zero even with Change with Buttons off, and the only thing that wakes them up is hitting the volume buttons.

Quick things to try are toggling Attention Aware off and back on, and checking Bluetooth. Sometimes audio is secretly routing to old earbuds or a car system. Forget those, reboot once, and see if it sticks.

  1. Check your DND status - If you're experiencing issues with notifications or incoming calls, it's important to check your Do Not Disturb (DND) status. On most devices, you can access this setting by going to "Settings" and selecting "Do Not Disturb." Make sure DND is turned off or adjust the settings to allow desired notifications and calls to come through.
  2. Check BedTime status -This may enable Sleep Focus automatically if Automatic Scheduled Activation is triggered.
